Job Summary
We are currently looking for a VAT/Tax Research Manager to join our innovative, market leading company. This is a special opportunity for a tax professional to join an entrepreneurial product team with an in-demand, front running product powering the VAT world.
The VAT/Tax Research Manager will ensure the thorough research and monitoring of VAT, GST and similar indirect tax laws globally. The Manager should be able to analyze and interpret tax laws, as well as meticulously follow processes and deadlines to integrate those laws into Avalara VAT-related products. The Manager will work closely with other members of the Global Content Team in leading tax research projects, effectively communicating the results of the research, and participating collaboratively in the corporate-wide compliance effort. The right candidate for this role will mentor and work in partnership with Content Team members as we continue to grow our products. This position will be well-suited for person with demonstrated transactional tax expertise and project management ability, as well experience in successfully collaborating with and leading remote teams.
Although not generally required, the candidate must be flexible to overlap work timings with other Avalara offices globally, as needed.

Job
- Interpret and analyze VAT laws, regulations, notifications, circulars, bulletins, etc. to enable accurate tax calculation and reporting.
- Ensure the up-to-date maintenance of existing content for jurisdictions supported by the Content Team.
- Carry out deep and detailed research to remain current with all of the latest tax news.
- In-depth review of VAT research analyses completed by Content Team members.
- Be a champion of the Content Teams continuous improvement in and refinement of their legal analyses and research techniques.
- Bring greater efficiency to the execution of projects, processes, as well as in coordinating and managing cross-team collaborations.
- Handle necessary and complex tax issues and special projects for our VAT products.
- Become an SME for Avalara VAT products
- Ensure and evolve research methods and bring uniformity to research documentation
- Collaborate closely with all key stakeholders, including Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Support, to enhance internal customer satisfaction
- Support customer service in assisting customers with escalated VAT enquiries.
- Participate in other professional activities as necessary to assure our products are current and represent the coverage required by our clients.
- Effectively work and communicate with team members to accomplish specific tasks in a timely, efficient and productive manner.
- Open to accept additional responsibilities to enable the team to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience / expertise in Value Added Tax and indirect taxation in the EU and globally
- Qualifications in accountancy, business or law. A JD/MBA/MST are a plus.
- Written and spoken fluency in English
- Ability to produce high-quality legal research
- The successful collaboration with and leading of remote teams.

- Proficiency in Windows, MS Word, Excel, Access, and other web-based tools.
- Fluency in languages other than English
- Demonstrable experience or qualifications in project management or managing process optimization
- Qualifications in accountancy, business or law as it relates to VAT
- Excellence in developing VAT engine requirements, as well as designing and testing use case scenarios
- Experience with VAT content QA testing
