Mechanical Design Engineer - Gas Turbine Auxiliary Equipment

Our expertise is constantly evolving and we have the opportunity to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer (Principal / Senior / Engineer level, depending on experience).

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for undertaking mechanical engineering design work associated with standard gas turbine package equipment. The work involves concept, basic & detail design work applicable to gas turbine package auxiliary equipment and systems, typically:-

- Acoustic attenuation and air filtration systems
- Base frames & small fabrications
- Gearboxes - main drive and auxiliary
- Couplings & guards
- Lubrication oil systems

- Start systems - hydraulic and variable speed electric motor driven
- Gas fuel and liquid fuel systems
- Installation & maintenance equipment and operating proceedures
- Mechanical aspects of standard AC generators and compressor driven units.

You will be involved in cross functional teams (engineering disciplines, procurement representatives, project managers etc) generating and developing potential solutions to Product Requirement Specifications generated from Sales/Marketing analysis.

Responsibilities:-

- Completion of analytical calculations in support of the mechanical equipment designs. These may include manual or computer based calculations such as finite element analysis (FEA).
- Completion of design reports & documentation in support of designs and to ensure compliance with European Directives and other international standards.
- Completion of safety analyses in support of above - Risk Analysis/FMEA/HAZID/HAZOP.
- Completion of Purchase specifications for vendor equipment.
- Completion of Vendor design reviews & approval. (Senior/Principal level only)
- Resolution of issues arising in the supply chain, package manufacture & site installation.
- Support for global contract engineering and manufacturing locations for gas turbine auxiliary equipment.

- Investigation of new technologies relevant to gas turbine packaged equipment.
- Investigation & resolution of field failures. This typically involves data gathering, root cause investigation and solution definition including issuing associated documentation.

Additional Responsibilities for Senior and Principal Levels

- Supervision of junior mechanical engineering team members including the sign-off of work.
- Supervision of internal design draughting personnel for the overall form design of packaged equipment and the associated detail drawings.
- Supervision of external engineering service companies. This may include design draughting work or analytical calculations such as 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
- Investigation & development of new processes & ways of working.

What is needed to do this job?

- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Mechanical engineering background with and for the senior positions experience is required in a similar role, but not necessarily in the gas turbine industry.
- Knowledge of gas turbines and their auxiliary system integration is desirable.
- Structural design experience and compliance with relevant standards and codes would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of the EU Machinery Directive would also be an advantage.
- Good capabilities in problem solving and analysis / interpretation of engineering data.
- Self-motivated with good interpersonal skills and willing to work within a team environment.
- There is a requirement to undertake some national & international travel, typically to vendors and global packager locations.
