Our client manufactures and dispatches over 2,500 products a day to hospitals throughout the UK, making a difference to thousands of patients’ lives, some of which are living with cancer, chronic illnesses and extreme pain.

Despite the growing number of patients (currently around 200,000 each year) treated under palliative care regimes, this clinical area receives virtually no attention in the area of drug development and innovation. Clinical practitioners in the area could be better supported by Pharmacy Technical/Specials Services, but there has been limited investment in the development of this area. Overwhelmingly, patients are choosing to be supported in the home and most are prescribed injectable medicines. The speciality calls for the novel combinations of drugs to be administered together driving complexity whilst demanding simplicity in order to allow a patient’s family/carers to support them in their chosen setting at home.

This PhD project will develop much needed research into the stability of commonly co-administered drugs, enabling their use in clinical practice where they can be delivered as safely and effectively as possible to the patient.

This is a collaborative project with our client, University of Bath and a regional palliative care charity. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing chemical stability analysis of the novel drug combinations using a variety of analytical techniques (HPLC, IR, NMR, LC-MS, etc.) in our client’s in-house stability laboratories and at the University of Bath as required.

You will have a range of responsibilities for this project to include:

  • Conduct research projects on physical and chemical stability of small molecule drugs and monoclonal antibodies using a range of methods.
  • Method development
  • Collecting, analysing, write up and dissemination of project results

The successful student will need to have a B.Sc. in Organic chemistry, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Biotechnology or related discipline, show self-motivation, a deep interest in research, and the ability to think and work independently.  Fluency in English language and good communication skills are essential.  You will also be required to apply to the University of Bath (Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology) and be accepted as a PhD student.

Nestled in the heart of the West Country with immediate access to the World Heritage City of Bath you can experience an unparalleled quality of life in a company that has a zero carbon status.
