MAIN JOB ROLE

This position is responsible for producing fully dimensioned drawings of jigs, fixtures, gauges, cutters, hand tools, special purpose machines, press and mould tools, castings, forgings and test equipment to conform to UK and EU standards including those of H&S in respect of tool design.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES                                                                                                       

  • Strive to consistently improve relevant departmental activities whilst working to best working practice at all times.
  • Support the manufacture and design of tooling whilst positively influencing seat design. Address Tool Design Requests (TDRs) as delegated with an underpinning consideration of creating a commercially viable and economical tool.
  • Ensure all tool drawings are assessed in respect of requirements to be met e.g. UK & EU standards, manufacturability, drawing clarity, accuracy, material requirements and desired end use whilst being economical in their design.
  • Support development programmes so that development hardware is manufactured on time.
  • Comply with tool making conventions – where creating a tool, whether for use once or in a multiple context, incorporate knowledge of fits and limits etc.
  • Communicate effectively with external suppliers/licensees and colleagues at all times, both inter-department and inter-company, whilst ensuring that the line manager is fully briefed at all times.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

  • Broad product knowledge likely to have been gained in-house or in a similar environment. 
  • Extensive exposure to manufacturing engineering (design and manufacture), with the fundamental ability to apply creative and original thought to the tooling design (and manufacture) activity.   
  • Thorough appreciation of UK & EU standards and extensive knowledge of production tooling drawings.  
  • Extensive CAD experience i.e. Siemens NX (3D/2D CAD modelling system).
  • Solid grounding in report writing and presentation work.

SPECIFIC / TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to relay technical information in a clear manner.
  • Commercial production acumen (economical tool design).
  • Strong communication skill – both verbal and written.
  • Strong MS Office skills – Excel and Word
  • Numerically sound (e.g. tolerance calculations).
  • SAP experience
  • Extensive CAD expertise i.e. UniGraphics (3D/2D CAD modelling system).

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and/or apprenticeship in Tool Design or relevant mechanical discipline. The practical ‘hands on’ experience of working in a Tool Room is a core requirement.
