The Opportunity

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced materials engineer / scientist / chemist specialising mainly in polymeric materials and their processing. Understanding of surface treatments a distinct advantage. Working in a fully equipped and specialised laboratory, you will be given responsibility for chemical analysis and interpretation, failure investigations, laboratory analysis, interesting and strategic projects, both nationally and internationally recognised. This technical and practical role will put you at the forefront of materials technology, and there will be opportunities for national and international travel supporting both customers and suppliers.

The Role

- Provide cost effective materials and chemistry expertise and consultancy to MBDA in the selection and utilisation of non-metallic materials (polymers, adhesives, sealants, encapsulants, lubricants, paints, and related processes. Knowledge of surface treatments may be required.
- Provide hands on or theoretical technical expertise, analysis and consultancy in the resolution of hardware problems and investigations either in development, in manufacture, or in delivered hardware
- Provide guidance in the use of REACH free and other environmental legislation impacted materials, including managing substitution strategies
- Carry out technical analyses and investigations, independently or through leadership of a multi-skilled project team, of complex problems, issues and opportunities to provide conclusions and implications.
- Support an international strategy, prepare and maintain M&P Specifications and Procedures ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and corporate requirements within area(s) of specialism and keep abreast of changes which may impact the business.
- Research, promote and qualify novel and innovative materials solutions to projects in relevant technical areas. This will involve opportunities to work with the very latest materials and associated technologies

- You will be joining a dynamic, innovative and focussed team of 10 materials engineers, responsible for the complete lifecycle of MBDA missile systems
- As a support function you will be working with the missile team to find resolution to issues at short notice either in production or in-service support. We encourage free thinking and novel problem solving strategies.

What are we looking for?

- You will ideally be degree qualified or equivalent, plus extensive relevant industrial experience in Materials Engineering specialising, ideally in the aerospace/defence sector but not essential.
- You will have specialist knowledge in several of the following fields; non-metallic materials including polymers, adhesives, lubricants, paint systems surface treatments, sealants, processing, and manufacture.
- Experience across all aspects of the materials and chemical engineering domain and an appreciation of other areas
- Able to work in a practical lab based environment both hands-on or in a more advisory role being able to provide technical support to others. Experience of operating and interpreting analysis equipment essential
- Demonstrated capability for interfacing with customers and internal clients, ideally military.
- Can define, re-engineer and review company materials selection and use processes.
- Good commercial and financial understanding, including negotiating and influencing skills.
- Excellent problem solving skills with a proven record in conducting successful technical investigations and research
- Highly developed communication skills: able to communicate verbally and in writing at Board level as well as at operator level.
- Well-developed planning and organisation skills and project management expertise.
- Able to develop links with other technical specialists, including outside MBDA, and to network effectively on an international basis.
- Knowledge and experience of Military Standards eg Def. Stan. 07-85 an advantage
- Ideally a chartered Chemist
