Join as Mapping and Planning Specialist and we'll train you to provide your Commanders with the vital geographical information they need to plan missions effectively. You'll use the very best in advanced IT technology and gain expert skills in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to ensure we always have the tactical advantage; whether it be across a top secret environment, a technical posting or a disaster relief plan. You could find yourself scanning satellite pictures for enemy sites, making 3D models of the battlefield, planning special routes and more. You'll also be eligible for funding to get your Foundation and Bachelor of Science degrees in Computing. All while travelling the world and gaining life-long friends along the way.

BECOME A BETTER YOU
First we'll teach you your soldier skills, like how to survive outdoors and how to fire weapons. After that, the Military Engineer course prepares you for life in the Royal Engineers. You'll learn to lay and clear mines, place demolition charges and build water crossings. Even more than that, you'll play a crucial part in our humanitarian efforts like mapping disaster relief plans and ensuring the safety of our troops and civilians. You will learn and apply all types of mapping techniques like geo-political, demographic, air space and geographic to name a few.

LEARN NEW SKILLS
You'll start with your basic soldier training and then it'll be nine weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment near Camberley, learning military engineering skills like knots and lashings, demolition, mine warfare and bridge building. You'll finish with 39 weeks' technical training at the Royal School of Military Survey in Hermitage, learning how to compile, prepare and manage geographical data. Your training will take you far - both inside and outside the Army as you gain transferable, sought after skills.

GAIN QUALIFICATIONS
The Army will pay for you to gain valuable qualifications. These could include:

  • Foundation Science Degree in Applied Computing (Defence Geographic Information), with a development programme to progress to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Applied Computing (Geographic Information)
  • Class 2 Geographic Technician Certificate of Higher Education
  • Military Engineer (Geographic Technician) Course
  • L5 Foundation degree at Geo Tech Class 1 level
