We have an exciting opportunity at St. Columba’s College for a Caretaker – Maintenance/Handyperson to join our team based in St. Albans. The role will be a full time, permanent position with three shifts patterns that are worked on a three week rota. The successful candidate will receive a salary of £25,000 per annum including an on call allowance.

Caretaker – Maintenance/Handyperson – Role Overview

You will assist in ensuring the college site is in a clean, tidy and presentable condition at all times and that it provides a safe and secure environment for students, staff, parents and visitors.  You will work to support the day to day activities of the college which involves carrying out activities such as site security, setting up rooms, porterage, some cleaning, general repairs and decorating. You will use your initiative and show flexibility to meet the constantly changing and unpredictable needs of the college as well as contributing to the overall ethos and aims of the college.

Key Duties & Responsibilities of our Caretaker – Maintenance/Handyperson 

- Security of the college’s buildings and grounds

- Operation and knowledge of the college’s plant/equipment, utility intakes and meters, alarm system, fuse boards, stopcock’s, CCTV etc.

- General porterage duties, including setting up of rooms and movement of furniture and equipment within the college.

- Handyperson duties, which may include door closer and mag-lock adjustments, minor repairs to furniture and fixtures and non-specialist decorating tasks, putting up shelves, hanging pictures, basic plumbing/electrical repairs etc.

- The postholder will be one of the college’s key holders for call out and emergency access to the premises.

- To be the primary contact for out of hours alarm call outs on a three week rota basis.

- To supervise out of hours lettings (evenings and weekends) as required by the college as per the Lettings Diary (overtime pay applicable where necessary)

- Advising the Premises Manager of faults to the buildings, fixtures and fittings which require specialist attention and carrying out any remedial action where possible.

- Responsibility for ensuring that day to day activities and work on the college site do not compromise the Health and Safety of any individual.

- To assist in ensuring that fire equipment is regularly checked and that contractors are contacted when equipment requires repair or replenishment and a history of those repairs are kept.

- To drive the minibus when required for college business including transporting students and collecting and delivering items. To record details of all driving carried out in the minibus book.

- To assist in carrying out risk assessments relating to site activities and premises related matters.

Safeguarding Children

The appointee’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the appointee becomes aware of any actual or potential risk to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to the Designated Senior Leader.

Key Skills & Experience required of our Caretaker – Maintenance/Handyperson

- Previous experience in any of the following trades: Plumbing, Electrical work, Carpentry

- Experience working as a caretaker / maintenance.

- Experience working in a school or a large employer such as the NHS.

- Experience working to a PPM annual rotor.

- Experience with risk assessments and H&S.

- Legionella and asbestos trained.

- Full UK Driving licence.

- DBS Clearance

Caretaker – Maintenance/Handyperson – Shift Pattern

Shifts patterns are worked on a three week rota:

Early Shift: 7am to 4pm; Normal Shift: 8am to 5pm; Late Shift: 10am to 7pm

8am to 5pm Saturday (this shift includes full site lock-up)
