About the organisation

Emmaus UK provides support for formerly homeless and socially excluded people to re-gain lost self-esteem by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work in one of our social enterprises. As part of the organisations federal structure, we have 28 communities across the UK, all with social enterprises supporting their own companions.

Emmaus is more in demand than ever before as homelessness continues to increase across the UK. We're seeing companions, as our residents are known, getting younger, more women seeking our support, and rising rents making moving into independent living more challenging than ever.

In 2015 Emmaus UK supported the federation in the UK to develop a new strategic plan. The new plan aims to provide better support to more people, funded by strong and sustainable social enterprise. We also want to start addressing the causes and consequences of homelessness and social exclusion, by campaigning for change.

About the role

Emmaus UK is looking for a trustee with a HR specialism to join its board of trustees. We're looking for a Trustee with strategic HR experience. While specific experience of the homelessness sector is not essential, we are looking for someone with a commitment to making a difference. As part of your training as a trustee with Emmaus UK, you will learn about the challenges and opportunities involved in working within a federal structure and how to get the most out of it.

As trustee with responsibility for HR at Emmaus UK, you will ensure our HR policies and procedures are in line with current legislation and regulations and best practice. You will also work with the board to ensure Emmaus UK delivers its strategic plan. You will work collaboratively with the other members of the board, the Chief Executive and the rest of the Senior Management Team and you will bring your knowledge and expertise to offer recommendations for improvements to our policies and procedures. This role will also sit on our Resources Committee, with delegated authority from the Board to deal with all HR and personnel matters.

Emmaus is working to overcome significant challenges and this role will play a key part in ensuring Emmaus is able to continue its important work into the future. It's a challenging time for us but there's so much that can be achieved. In return for your commitment as trustee, Emmaus UK will offer training and development opportunities, and the chance to diversify your skills and experience.

Time commitment

Board meetings are quarterly, with 2 being overnight stays. Resources committee meetings are also quarterly. Time also needed for reading papers.

How to apply

Applications must be made to Reach in the first instance. Please provide your CV along with a covering letter stating why you wish to work for the organisation, how your skills will add value to the board and any other relevant information.
