Finance Manager (maternity cover)

This position is to cover for maternity leave, expected from mid- to late-June 2017, until mid-July 2018.

The School

Charterhouse was founded in 1611. The original foundation was at Sutton's Hospital in London. The School moved to its present magnificent 250 acre site near Godalming in Surrey in 1872. Many of its buildings are Grade II listed. In addition to the main school buildings, there are 12 boarding houses, 4 girls' halls of residence, and around 80 residential properties spread over the school campus and nearby town environs.

There are over 800 pupils aged 13 to 18, all of whom are boarders, except around 30 who are day boarders. Over 70 girls are admitted to the Sixth Form each year. The School enjoys outstanding cultural and sporting facilities and an enviable record of academic and all-round achievement. During non-term time, the School facilities are used for commercial purposes to raise money for School bursaries. In total Charterhouse employs around 350 staff, 110 of whom are involved with the teaching of the pupils.

Basic Purpose of the Job:

To prepare accurate and timely financial and management information, for the Charterhouse entities in keeping with current financial standards and to support the Finance Bursar.

Main Duties:

Charterhouse Club Ltd

Preparation of monthly management accounts and supporting schedules
Handling queries arising from the Nominal ledger
Monthly accruals journals where required
Preparation of Latest Expected Results
Preparation of a 5 year plan
Preparation and delivery of the monthly payroll
Improvements to Club financial controls procedures and systems
Assisting the Club Manager with the annual budgeting process
Assisting the Club Manager with capital expenditure forecasts
Preparing the annual accounts and audit schedules; performing the audit
Liaising with the auditors and HMRC

Charterhouse School

Preparation of advanced fee quotations
Accounting for the Carthusian Trust
Fixed Asset analysis and control
Support to the Finance Bursar for systems for example Sage 200; Sage 50; Furlong; Online payments; Albany pay.
Accurate tracking and forecasting of Scholarships and Bursaries
Project work, as directed by the Finance Bursar, eg on-going development and upgrade of SAGE; ongoing development and improvement of management reports and systems
Keeping abreast of all aspects of the accounts department, including payroll, in order to provide any necessary backup in the absence of the Finance Bursar

Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities:

None

As agreed necessary by the Finance Bursar.

Not a budget-holding role.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

Relevant Experience / Knowledge & Technical Competencies

Experience of working within a professional finance department
Skilled at preparing accounts to full Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet
Highly proficient in use of Microsoft software, in particular Excel (eg. setting up and extensive use of macros, pivot tables, modeling etc) and Word
Sound understanding of current financial accounting practices
Sound track record in managing implementation of work projects

Working knowledge of SAGE

Special Working Conditions:

This position is to cover for maternity leave, expected from mid- to late-June 2017, until mid-July 2018.

Working hours for this role are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday (09:00 - 17:00) with one hour (unpaid) for lunch. The financial year end is 31 July, the post holder must therefore to be available during August and September, annually, to prepare the necessary papers for the annual audit, which takes place in mid-September.

The Job Holder's responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact, will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School's Safeguarding Policy at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the Job Holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School they must report any concerns to the School's Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Notice:

2 weeks during probationary period (which is normally six months). Once the appointment is confirmed both parties are required to give at least two months' notice.
