Job Description

Job Title: Junior School Teaching Assistant

Reports to: The Bursar but with day to day responsibility to the Teaching Assistant Supervisor and the Head of the Junior School

Location: King Edward’s School, North Road, Bath

Hours of Work: This is a Term-time Post for 36 weeks per annum.  22.5 hours per week over 5 days, as agreed with the Head of the Junior School, but likely to be 8.45am – 1.45pm with half hour unpaid lunch break.

Salary Scale: Teaching Assistant SCP13-17: £16,924 - £18,440 (for full-time, 37 hours per week).

Higher Level Teaching Assistant SCP 19 £19803 (for full-time 37 hours per week).

Starting Salary: Dependent on experience & qualifications

Holidays: 20 days plus 2 statutory days paid holiday per annum, rising by 1 extra day for each completed year up to a maximum of 25 days. As this is a Term-time post, an element of pay currently equivalent to 13% is paid in lieu of holidays taken in School holidays in the first instance rising to 15.6% after 5 years’ service.

Pension: Automatic enrolment into the KES Support Staff Personal Pension Scheme with Employer’s Contribution of 6% of salary, to be matched by 2% Employee contribution.

The School:  King Edward’s School, founded in 1552, is an Independent Co-Educational Day School; there are currently 760 pupils in the Senior School (including 220 pupils in the Sixth Form), 190 in the Junior School and 100 in the Pre-Prep.

The School is situated on a privileged 14 acre site on the south eastern edge of Bath, just below the University, with fine views of the City Centre and surrounding hills.  The Pre-Prep School is situated to the north-west of the City on a self-contained site in Weston Lane.  In addition, there are attractive playing fields one mile from the school at Bathampton.

Job Purpose:

To act as a classroom and teaching assistant in support of the teaching staff of the School with regard to all aspects of educational, pastoral, social and welfare needs of the pupils during their attendance at School.

Main Activities:

  • Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the head teacher, SENCO and class teachers.
  • Supervise children at all times and maintain appropriate child:teacher ratios. 
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
  • Attend scheduled staff and INSET meetings when requested by the Head teacher.
  • Adhere to school requirements in regards to professional development.
  • Follow and adhere to all School policies and procedures including child protection and health & safety practices and procedures. Assist teaching staff in the implementation of safety rules and regulations.
  • Attend to other related duties as may be requested from time to time.
  • Supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes, and supporting the teaching staff on outside trips and visits. 
  • Prepare and present displays of students' work.
  • Support class teachers in photocopying and other administrative tasks in order to support teaching.
  • Support the aims and ethos of the school.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance. 
  • To undertake other related tasks as reasonably required by the Head of the Junior School.

  • Able to relate to Junior School age pupils with enthusiasm
  • Organised person able to cope with various requests in a timely manner
  • Willingness, flexibility and ability to undertake a wide variety of tasks
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety practices and a willingness to undertake related Health & Safety and First Aid training from time to time.
  • Willingness to administer simple First Aid.
  • Able to work under occasional pressure or to tight deadlines
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Basic level of IT skills
  • Must live within easy commuting distance of the School.
