Join the RNLI and help save lives at sea

Coxswain Mechanic
Girvan Lifeboat Station • Ref: 7053
£25,156 - £29,595 (dependent on experience)

There is an opportunity at Girvan Lifeboat Station for someone whose resilience and leadership skills are just as strong as an ability to handle a boat in adverse sea conditions.

The majority of your time will be divided between ensuring the Mersey Class lifeboat and her equipment work to the highest order and training the volunteer crewmembers at Girvan Lifeboat Station.

Inspiring their motivation and progress, you’ll take them on seagoing exercises, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.

And because there’s always a high degree of interest from the public, you’ll have frequent opportunities to meet them and talk about your station’s work.

You’ll need to demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential. You must also be familiar with the correct operation, maintenance and repair of associated machinery and equipment. You’ll already ideally be adept at handling a Mersey Class all weather lifeboat and have a detailed knowledge of navigation principles and ‘IRPCS’.

Relevant maritime qualifications would be an added bonus to complement your verifiable marine experience and ideally, you will either have experience in routine maintenance, mechanical repair, identifying defects, logging and reporting them on a database, or you will be willing to learn.

As well as being required to live in close proximity to the lifeboat station in order to meet callout response criteria, this seagoing appointment is subject to satisfying medical and eyesight requirements, and has associated conditions of service.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with both volunteers and staff at the lifeboat station, Regional Base and National Fundraising Office.
