St John Cymru-Wales is Wales’ leading first aid charity. With over 4,000 volunteers and 200 staff, supported by commercial training, event management and ambulance services, we are a complex and diverse group offering a really exciting challenge to the right person.

The Director of People is a senior management appointment with full responsibility for the people management activity for all employees and volunteers. This activity encompasses:

  • Human resources
  • Volunteer membership support
  • Safeguarding
  • Health & safety

The focus of the role centres on driving people management strategy and managing the People Directorate team, procedures and processes.

As a member of the Senior Management Team, the People Director will co-operate closely with the Chief Executive, senior management team and Trustee’s in the overall strategic, financial and operational development of the Charity.

Main duties

  • Contributing to the development of organisation strategies by identifying and researching people related issues; contributing information, analysis, and recommendations to organisation strategic thinking and direction.
  • Implementing people strategies within St John Wales in cooperation with key stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Developing an overall people management business plan with measurable objectives and a budget.
  • Playing a key role organisational development and driving change management initiatives.
  • Guiding and managing the overall provision of people related operations and services, including but not restricted to:
    • Recruitment & selection
    • Remuneration, terms & conditions and benefits
    • Employee and volunteer relations
    • Change management

  • Leading and developing the People Directorate team.
  • Acting as the externally facing representative for people management for St John Wales.
  • Supporting Trustees and management by providing human resources advice, counsel and decisions; analysing information and applications.
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and regulatory requirements in respect of employment, health & safety and safeguarding.
  • In accordance with St John Wales’ values, overseeing the management of employee and volunteer safety, welfare, wellbeing and health through the employee and volunteer line management.
  • Giving counsel and overseeing complex people related issues such as safeguarding, grievance and disciplinary cases to ensure that difficult cases are handled with professionalism.
  • Providing people related volunteer member administration and support.
  • Guiding Trustee, management, employee and volunteer actions by researching, developing, writing and updating policies, procedures, methods and guidelines to ensure best practice and good governance.
  • Ensuring that managers, employees and volunteers are fully aware of people related policies and key organisational issues.
  • Analysing the effectiveness of the People Directorates efforts both financially and in terms of whether they meet the charities objectives and aims.
  • Co-ordinate remuneration policies and advise Trustees and senior management.
  • Control the People budget and report appropriately.
  • Participating in project teams, whole organisation projects, internal working groups as required, including taking a lead role when required.

Applicants must have extensive experience in a senior generalist HR role. A relevant first degree or equivalent is required ideally with a post graduate qualification in HR or relevant subject and membership of CIPD. You will also be able to demonstrate the range of skills and abilities essential to effective HR including outstanding communication, influencing and interpersonal skills as well as a thorough knowledge of legislation.
