Job title: Cardiff City of Sanctuary Training and Engagement Officer

Location: 18 Harrowby Lane, Cardiff, CF10 5GN

Responsible to: Wales Cities of Sanctuary Project Co-ordinator

Salary: £22,000 pro rata (plus 8% pension contribution)

Hours: 14 hours a week (2 days)

This post will be funded until March 2018. Extension to this post will be dependent on securing further funding.

Main purpose of the post

  • To provide high quality training for local organisations to raise awareness of refugee and asylum issues and how these affect those with whom they come into contact.
  • To engage high profile organisations in Cardiff and encourage them to promote the City of Sanctuary vision.
  • To establish a Cardiff Sanctuary Speakers team of ‘experts by experience’ who have been through or who are going through the asylum process, and who are trained in public speaking and presentation skills.
  • To liaise with local media, and use social media to promote the activities of City of Sanctuary in Cardiff.

Background to the post

DPIA are a registered charity that aims to support the integration of refugees and asylum seekers in Wales.

This post is funded by the Big Lottery’s People and Places ‘Wales Cities of Sanctuary’ project and will be working to achieve four project outcomes:

  1. The welcome of people seeking sanctuary will be improved across Cardiff and Swansea through the CoS movement.
  2. Community relations in Cardiff and Swansea will be strengthened through an increase in the understanding of refugee and asylum issues in the receiving community.
  3. The lives of people seeking sanctuary will be improved through reducing isolation and increasing integration.
  4. There will be an increase in access to services and an improvement within services in order to meet the needs of people seeking sanctuary.

This post will complement the Cardiff City of Sanctuary Development Worker post (3 days a week) in achieving these four outcomes in Cardiff. The post is managed by the Wales Cities of Sanctuary project co-ordinator, who also oversees a team of three in Swansea.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate appropriate skills, knowledge, and/or experience in each of the following:

Essential criteria

  • 5 GCSEs A*-C or equivalent
  • A knowledge of and commitment to DPIA’s aims and objectives and the City of Sanctuary vision
  • Demonstrable understanding of the issues and legislation affecting refugees and asylum seekers
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including ability to speak at public events
  • Experience engaging with local media, including writing press releases
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including time management
  • Proficiency of Microsoft Office tools and extensive experience in using email, social media and the internet in general
  • Interpersonal skills, including awareness of cultural differences and effective team working
  • Demonstrable experience of developing networks and a commitment to sharing knowledge and skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel as necessary
  • An understanding of the importance of compliance with workplace policies and ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • Sound understanding and commitment to equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and its application in line with the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act

Highly desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with and ensuring the participation of people seeking sanctuary
  • Experience of working with people who are vulnerable or oppressed and have experienced inequality or injustice
  • Proven experience in the training or education sector
  • Experience of managing volunteers

Desirable criteria

  • Command of another language in addition to English and/or Welsh
  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent

  • Cysylltu â’r cyfryngau lleol, a defnyddio’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol i hyrwyddo gweithgareddau Dinas Noddfa Caerdydd.

Bydd y swydd hon yn ategu swydd Gweithiwr Datblygu Dinas Noddfa Caerdydd (3 diwrnod yr wythnos) wrth sicrhau’r pedwar canlyniad hyn yng Nghaerdydd. Rheolir y swydd hon gan gydgysylltydd prosiectau Dinasoedd Noddfa Cymru, sy’n goruchwylio tîm o dri yn Abertawe hefyd.
