The role of the Senior Legal Counsel - Wealth is to provide legal advice, guidance and support to the UK Retail Banking and Wealth Management (RBWM) Wealth business across the suite of products and queries relevant to the area of focus and to ensure the Group's exposure to legal risk is managed.

Your responsibilities will include:


Providing and managing the provision of counsel and legal support within the assigned area of responsibility and on a variety of legal matters including matters that may be complex or have potential for significant impact. Being considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner to the UK RBWM Wealth business. Providing support and guidance to the UK RBWM Wealth business with regard to legal risks arising in jobholder's area of expertise. Implementing legal policies to ensure that the Group's exposure to Global legal risks is managed appropriately within the jobholder's areas of expertise. Participating in key governance committees as required, including Product Control Committee and Wealth Management Oversight Committee and to deputise for the Head of Wealth, UK RBWM Legal when required. Providing high quality specialised legal and regulatory advice, guidance and support to the UK RBWM Wealth business Managing the provision of prompt, commercial, practical and often complex and / or specialised legal advice from the UK RBWM Legal Team to the UK RBWM Wealth business. Being proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications. Ensuring the Head of Wealth, UK RBWM Legal is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business area and major legislative changes in area of expertise. Recommending selection and managing relationship with panel law firms/ counsel. Maintaining and developing positive and professional working relationships with all members of the UK RBWM Legal Team and UK Wealth business. Participating effectively as part of the UK RBWM Legal Team. Sharing legal knowledge and best practices with legal colleagues across the legal function. Participating in the co-ordination and promotion of initiatives that result in the sharing of legal knowledge and best practices across the RBWM Legal Team. Providing legal services in a cost-effective manner. Co-ordinating and managing the approach to legal risk in the UK RBWM Wealth business to ensure that the interests of the HSBC Group are adequately protected. Implementing risk management policies and controls in the UK Wealth business. Allocation and prioritization of work across the UK RBWM Legal Team and liaising with business stakeholders where required. Oversight of legal risk reporting to relevant internal committees. Membership of key internal governance forums as required. Representing UK RBWM Legal at Steering Group level for the UK Wealth business. Budget oversight and control of external legal spend. Assisting the UK RBWM Wealth business and the RBWM MiFID II project to remain compliant with legal risk management requirements set out in the Group Standards Manual and Legal Functional Instructions Manual (FIM).


Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

Experience working in relevant environment/s, i.e. knowledge and experience of retail banking, corporate and securities law concepts. Role relevant qualifications, i.e. qualified Solicitor in England and Wales. Experience working in relevant environment/s, i.e. compliance experience is desirable but not essential. A flexible and adaptable management style with experience of developing yourself and others. Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way to wide and varied audiences. Built effective networks across business areas, developing relationships based on mutual trust and encouraging others to do the same. Experience of creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans which consistently deliver desired results. A comprehensive understanding of risk management and proven experience of ensuring own/others' compliance with relevant regulatory processes.

The base location for this role is Birmingham.

We are required by the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Act 2013 to create a ring-fenced bank in the UK by 1 January 2019. Entirely new from the ground up, HSBC UK's head office is opening in Birmingham. The location of this role will move to our new state of the art offices at 2 Arena Central during 2018.
