Would you like this distinguished opportunity to become our Deputy Director of the UK Ship Register on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, increasing the amount of quality ships that have a UK flag?

The UK Ship Register (UKSR) is well respected within maritime industries and the international shipping community. With your commercial experience and strong stakeholder management skills, you'll be responsible for attracting more quality owners with quality ships to the UK register through a commercially aware and customer service focussed delivery model.

As our Deputy Director, you'll manage the UKSR directorate's organisation and working methods to achieve and maintain world-class standards of customer service expected of a world leading flag administration. You'll work to nurture business relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in government, the maritime industry and the international shipping community.

Your key responsibilities in this role include:

• Working with the director to identify and implement commercial opportunities to double the size of the UKSR
• Providing the leadership, inspiration and change to position the UKSR as a stand-alone, commercial and customer focused directorate within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency
• Leading functional teams across the directorate to deliver important business plan targets and monitor performance against those targets, while creating the right conditions for growing and maintaining the UKSR
• Being an ambassador for the UKSR at local, national and international forums representing the director of the UKSR as and when required
• Ensuring that effective business continuity arrangements are in place in collaboration with senior managers
• Collaborating with senior managers in effective workforce planning and promoting the people engagement agenda across the workforce
• Working closely with senior colleagues within the directorate of Maritime Safety and Standards (DMSS) in the deployment of our marine surveyors, inspectors, technical experts and administrators in their technical, educational and regulatory roles
• Provide leadership and role model the level of customer service standards expected of a world leading flag administration
• Having oversight and governance of our business streams and making sure that they're delivered to the highest standards while maintaining excellent financial management and use of resources making efficiency savings

About you:
You can demonstrate your knowledge and experience of leading diverse functions in a fast moving maritime commercial delivery environment, supported by compelling evidence of success in senior leadership roles.

You'll have a proven track record of successfully managing a complex organisational change programme and good working knowledge and practical application of maritime regulatory limits and constraints.

You will have working knowledge of Flag State responsibilities and statutory functions of audit, examination, survey and/or inspection.

Working as a separate entity but alongside the MCA's regulatory function, the UK Ship Register (UKSR) directorate within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency works to promote the UK flag worldwide to attract quality owners with quality ships to the UK register through a commercially aware and customer service focussed delivery model.

Operational Priority in the MCA Business Plan is for the UKSR to actively pursue market share by working with the maritime industry to encourage quality ships to join the UK register with the aim of achieving substantial and sustained growth in the size of the UK register as part of the UK government's overall Maritime Growth strategy.

Your Personal Statement must evidence how you meet the requirements below -

•Strong leadership and management skills in a commercial environment, including a successful track record in front facing customer and client relations in flag administration, ship classification, ship operations or ship management
• An understanding of how commercial operations within central government department or agency operates, in particular an appreciation of departmental/ agency priorities and the risks and issues typically associated with delivering commercial activities
• Strong leadership and management skills in encouraging contributions and involvement from staff in delivering outcomes
• Demonstration of successfully managing a complex organisational change programme considering impact on business area
• Demonstration of experience in leading diverse functions in maritime commercial delivery environments and success in a senior leadership role
• Demonstration of identifying risks, problems and making well considered or difficult decisions in delivering stakeholder expectations
• Proven track record of leading in a maritime environment working with delivery partners to achieve commercial delivery

The post is offered on a Fixed Term contract for 2 years with a possibility of permanency.
