Head of Strategic Engagement and Partnerships

Circa GBP55,000 to GBP65,000 per annum

Stevenage, Hertfordshire (with travel to London and other UK locations)

The IET are seeking a Head of Strategic Engagement and Partnerships (SEP) to lead and deliver on strategic engagement across Industry, Government and the engineering community.

You will lead a team of industry and government engagement professionals to facilitate the development of shared knowledge; encouraging debate and understanding of key issues. Your work will drive the successful positioning of The IET as a trusted voice and strategic partner of choice in delivering impact and change for the benefit of engineering and society!

The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership skills with the ability to develop, motivate and integrate diverse teams. You will be leading the SEP team to ensure collaborative, cross IET working which strengthens the impact and outcome of key activities.

The Head of SEP will have experience of stakeholder engagement and management, with a track record in identifying the right opportunities to achieve effective strategic partnerships. You will therefore be able to influence and create the routes, partnerships or networks needed to generate ideas and thought leadership in a particular area.

The ideal candidate will have experience in policy or policy formation and Government engagement - with the aim of securing a high profile for The IET within UK Parliament and ensuring that The IET is positioned to provide timely advice to policymakers and the public.

This is an exciting time to join The IET's Governance and Policy Directorate. You will be heading up a newly formed team and will have the opportunity to take ownership of the development of the SEP strategy and plan in line with the wider IET objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities (summary)


To lead the development of the SEP strategy and plan in line with the IET Strategy and coordinate activities around content and engagement with external stakeholders and volunteers.
To maintain an overview of all activity within the department, ensuring it remains consistent with the overall IET strategy and plan.
Assess product/event development/delivery options and strategic partnerships against the IET strategy and the IET's overall activities.
To work across the IET to proactively engage with staff and volunteers, to harness the broader knowledge network in support of the activities
Direct the work of the department through managers as appropriate, ensuring each member is clear on their focus area and are motivated to deliver.
To propose, monitor and evolve relevant KPI's for the department reflecting the measurement and outcomes of high quality engagement
To develop relevant content across all areas of strategic engagement
To approve member-led IET policy on issues on which it can be expected to have a view and in accordance with Trustee endorsed procedures.
To increase the IET's profile within UK Parliament and Government (including the Devolved Administrations) and the EC through collaboration and interaction with Parliamentary Groups and Committees, Government officials, and individual Ministers and members of parliaments/assemblies.
Working with the Communications team, to actively engage with the media, the profession, and the public through activities such as briefings, presentations and public interest events.
To co-ordinate and lead joint policy activities with other engineering institutions and organisations.
To represent the IET in the public arena, attending meetings and delivering presentations.


Person Specification

Essential Criteria


Educated to degree level or equivalent with demonstrable management experience.
Interest in engineering and technology and knowledge of the current commercial/industrial environment.
Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team in a demanding customer-focused environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, persuade and motivate at all levels particularly at senior levels
Excellent communication skills with the versatility to communicate effectively at all levels and to analyse and present information to different audiences.
Sound project management and planning skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
Ability to assimilate complex information quickly and form a big picture view
Ability to act on own initiative and problem solve as well as work effectively as part of a team
Demonstrable budget management experience
Understanding of public policy making within the UK and Europe, and the ability to support interaction governments of interest to the IET.
Proven ability to research, analyse and interpret complex information and to present analysis and advice clearly and effectively to a range of stakeholders.
Experience of managing a diverse team of highly qualified individuals.

Experience of working with volunteers in a membership-based organisation.
Experience of working with Boards/Committees.
Experience in a dynamic, fast moving high performing thought leadership/policy/public affairs/research role.
