Purpose of the Post
To support the classroom tutor
Assist the students in their education, vocational, recreational and social activities and in the acquisition of personal, domestic and social skills
Lines of Responsibility
Teaching Assistant’s are responsible to the Head of Education
Main Duties
Support teaching staff in a variety of sessions both in the College and community
To support students, in learning about and dealing with the tasks and responsibilities of their education programme.
To accompany students into the community, with either an individual or in a small group, and assist them in learning appropriate skills
To assist students where necessary in their personal care and encourage them to develop self-care skills and an awareness of their personal hygiene and appearance (staff will deal with, where possible, personal hygiene only with the same gender)
To facilitate opportunities for students to communicate and understand their feelings and wishes appropriately
To work with students who exhibit challenging behaviour by helping them to learn self-control and more socially acceptable ways of communicating or coping with situations, and by managing their behaviour as necessary
To support the well-being of students in their physical and emotional development
To encourage and enable students make informed choices in their lives and to assist them in working through the consequences
To assess and record the individual’s needs and wishes and to work with staff and external agencies in devising and implementing plans to meet those needs and wishes
To monitor and record the students’ progress and keep individual records up-to-date
To assist in the provision of displays and other related material
To carry out administrative duties and functions as necessary to the role
To use and look after College equipment in an appropriate manner in furtherance of a student’s educational programme
To attend and participate as required, in reviews and other internal and external meetings
To show initiative and take responsibility where appropriate
To work within the framework of the College’s policies and Procedures
To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Head of Education or Principal
