The RAF relies heavily on defence intelligence to support operations in both peace and war time. Intelligence Analysts (Linguist) interpret foreign language transmissions using state-of-the-art surveillance systems. They provide vital intelligence to support military forces deployed around the world.

Typical Responsibilities:

• Collect, collate and evaluate intelligence from multiple sources.
• Monitor and analyse radio and electronic transmissions broadcast throughout the world.
• Gather valuable information about enemies strengths, weaknesses and movements
• Disseminate tailored Intelligence to commanders, aircrew or troops on the ground.

IN THE RAF MY ROLE

‘My role is to intercept, listen to and analyse foreign signals – and then pass information on to commanders so that British Armed Forces can carry out their roles safely. I could be listening to air traffic control or communications between foreign troops.’

MY DAY

‘RAF Intelligence Analysts work pretty hard and we work shifts. But I never wanted a nine-to-five job and I like knowing that what I do really matters. Because of my language skill, I was deployed overseas during recent operations. My role was to screen radio communications and highlight anything that was of intelligence interest.

Being on operation was an amazing experience – we all slept in tents and lived out of our kit bags. At the start of my training for this job I studied a foreign language in a small group class as well as learning how to operate the equipment. After initial training, we go back quite frequently for further language study.
