Customs Compliance Specialist
Salary: GBP20 - 27K (depending on experience / qualifications)

Our Client is a leading supplier to a highly regulated industry who are extremely well established. With several offices internationally they have won success by utilising strategically located sites to ensure timely delivery of products to meet and exceed customer expectations. With efficient just in time methodologies and lean activity, their management of the supply chain is second to none.
Following recent business expansion, our Client is now seeking a Customs Compliance Specialist to work from their state of the art facility in the Ellesmere Port area. The main purpose of the role is to ensure full compliance with UK Customs regulations, minimise our Client's duty liabilities, and maximise business flexibility. With administrative support and access to consultancy services, this role focuses on overall compliance, improvements, and identification / implementation of opportunity.
Responsibilities include:-
• Develop and maintain awareness of the changing Customs regulatory environment and best practice, through research and where necessary through input and advice from subject experts and international colleagues
• Explore, assess and recommend opportunities to increase process efficiency and accuracy, and to reduce cost and duty exposure
• Develop, document, implement and review compliant, effective and efficient Customs procedures and processes within the business, including the correct and timely export / discharge of duty liabilities
• Maintain an effective working relationship with, and ensure good communication to and from, our Client's import agent
• Liaise with Purchasing to ensure that pre-alerts and shipping documents are provided to our import agent in a timely fashion
• Ensure retention of Customs related records in accordance with business needs and HMRC's requirements
• Ensure our Client's import agent is provided with correct clearance instructions for all imported materials
• Monitor and report on the accuracy of our Client's import agent's data entry and submissions against received paperwork, clearance and discharge instructions
• Confirm the accuracy of monthly MSS reports issued by HMRC, and quarterly Bills of Discharge issued by DSV, and ensure any necessary corrections are authorised and made in accordance with our Client's Customs procedures
• Support management audit of the Customs processes and procedures.
Suitable candidates will possess the following skills / experience:-
• Further education in a business related and / or logistics subject area
• Minimum of 3 years recent experience in customs compliance, with experience of working with HMRC and of reporting, duty relief, deferment, shipping documents, incoterms, approvals and compliance audit
• Self starter, capable of being the knowledge expert within the business
• Ability to read and interpret documents, some of which will be regulatory; also to write reports and correspondence to colleagues and external stakeholders such as HMRC
• Able to speak effectively before groups of fellow employees, regulatory authorities and auditors, suppliers, consultants and occasionally customers
• Excellent mathematical skills, able to calculate, present and check for accuracy figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, proportions and percentages
• High levels of attention to detail
• Good reasoning ability, able to identify and define problems and opportunities, collect data, establish facts and constraints, and draw valid conclusions and recommendations
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
• Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgement, discretion and decision making in order to achieve organisational objective
• Able to use Microsoft office products, particularly Excel, in which you should be advanced or expert level
• Full driving licence (preferred but not essential).
Hours of work are around 8.30 am - 5.30 pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week), however this would need to be flexible on occasions in order to meet business needs. This role will also involve some travel to other sites in the UK and potentially 1-2 trips internationally each year as the role progresses, to liaise with international colleagues.
