The science laboratories comprise a suite of five teaching labs, a number of project and prep rooms, a chemical store and an analytical suite. These areas and the Technical Team which supports them deliver practical work for modules in a range of courses including Biology, Environmental Science, Food with Nutrition, Geography Human Nutrition and Psychology. The labs are also used for staff and student research. Several of the labs have been subject to considerable investment and refurbishment recently, including a microbiology project lab. and the analytical suite which is equipped to run analyses using AAS, GC and HPLC.

About the role

The main responsibilities of the role will be working with academic staff to prepare, and support technical demonstrations. A student facing role, it will directly work with students to give technical guidance and support on research projects, whilst having responsibility for managing, maintaining and running the analytical suite.

About you (requirements)

We are looking for applicants who are passionate about Science. You should hold a relevant Science Degree or equivalent, and be capable of undertaking sample preparation and analytical work and have good laboratory organisational management. You should have experience of undertaking Food or Environmental analysis using equipment such as HPLC, GC or AAS. Key IT skills across the Microsoft Office packages are essential, and a familiarity with statistical software packages such as ‘R’ are desirable.

We are looking for a team player who can also work on his/her own initiative, who is willing to take on a mentoring role as necessary. Good organisational skills and time management are also key. The post will involve bending, stretching and lifting so a previous experience of manual handling is essential. An ability to drive a minibus or willingness to learn is desirable.
