This is your opportunity to assist in the work activities of MCA Surveyors in maintaining high standards of marine safety, minimise loss of life amongst seafarers and coastal users and minimise pollution from ships of both the sea and coastline.

You'll complete a training programme to become an MCA Marine Surveyor and gain an understanding of the government's maritime strategy for 'Safer Ships and Cleaner Seas'.

The size, scale and importance of these activities mean that you will quickly develop invaluable and transferable skills and experience.

In this exciting role, you'll:
• gain an understanding of survey, inspection, audit and enforcement activities
• complete the required elements of the MCA Graduate Trainee Surveyor programme to a satisfactory standard
• assist Policy Managers and Marine Office Surveyors with their key responsibilities in developing regulations and guidance
• attend Marine Office and HQ Branch Management meetings
• support HR best practice

There'll be times where you'll be asked to travel on official duty within the UK and short term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home. You'll need a passport valid for international travel and driving licence valid for driving in the UK.

About you:
You will have studied for a degree in naval architecture, marine engineering or mechanical engineering.

You're used to working with information and are familiar with the Microsoft Office suite of programmes.

You don't need to have had previous employment experience as this is an industrial placement. Any previous maritime experience, while not essential, would be an advantage.

About us:
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) implements the government's maritime safety policy in the United Kingdom and works to prevent the loss of life and occurrence of pollution on the coast and at sea.

The Directorate of Maritime Safety and Standards (DMSS) inspect and survey ships to ensure that they are meeting both UK and international safety, security and anti-pollution standards. Additionally, DMSS works closely with the Directorate of the United Kingdom Shipping Register (DUKSR) in providing certification to ships and seafarers, the registering of vessels on the UK flag and responding to pollution from shipping and offshore installations.

The post is offered on a Fixed Term contract for 2 years with a possibility of permanency.
