Our clients has 2 Trainee Analyst roles available-1 x maternity cover and 1 x permanent-please specify which role you are applying for.

The analysis of drugs of abuse in biological samples is conducted by either immunoassay, confirmatory techniques (such as GC/MS and LC/MS), or by a combination of both immunoassay and confirmatory techniques.

The role of the Trainee Analyst is to undertake operations within the screening or confirmatory laboratories, ensuring that all laboratory based screening results are accurate and timely and are entered into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in order that they can be delivered to customers within agreed timeframes.

Main duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertake the day to day work programme in the laboratory to agreed deadlines and quality standards
  • Ensure that analysis is completed and results are ready to be reviewed within agreed deadlines
  • Help with maintenance, calibration and 'trouble shooting' of analytical instruments
  • Assist in the maintenance of quality standards by running the appropriate internal QA/QC samples
  • Adherence to quality systems, including review and amendment of relevant SOPS as necessary
  • Assist in the preparation of reagents, calibration standards and control materials in accordance with relevant SOPs and logged within the appropriate logs
  • Assist with stock control to ensure adequate levels of 'in-date' reagents, chemicals and consumables, enabling monitoring of laboratory budgets, and to be able to explain purchases if asked to do so by accounts
  • Continuous Improvement - to support the improvement of existing analytical methods and the development of new methods as and when the need arises.
  • Laboratory cleanliness and maintenance of a safe and pleasant work environment
  • Carry out tasks as directed by the Screening/Confirmation Manager and to feedback any problems, working to assist in their resolution

The successful candidate must be willing to participate in training programmes across Laboratory Operations to develop themselves and to increase their breadth of understanding of analytical techniques and drug metabolism, as well as to increase their understanding of the function of Operations as a whole. This will include training and working in both screening and confirmation labs, depending upon business need and day-to-day demands/staffing levels, and assisting with the accessioning process if required to do so.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Science Graduate, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Aptitude for problem solving
  • Able to work flexibly and under pressure
