The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are looking for a Mechanical Technician to join the Antarctic Marine Engineering Team. This role has a key role in the development of scientific equipment for BAS programmes.

You will be required to manage the AME workshop and provide mechanical engineering support at BAS to all divisions in the design, build and testing of systems used in BAS research. You will also be responsible for managing and maintaining all health and safety systems in the workshop and electronics laboratory.

To be successful, you must have experience developing mechanical equipment and systems from concept designs, have good mathematical and analytical skills and knowledge of CAD and Office packages. You must have good interpersonal skills to communicate to a wide range of staff and suppliers along as well as work closely in a small team.

Purpose:

Mechanical design, development and manufacture of special purpose equipment for use in Antarctic programs. Management of AME workshop and safety systems.

Qualifications:

ONC / OND in Mechanical engineering (or equivalent). Craft apprenticeship in a relevant discipline.

Duties:

• Design, development and manufacture, operation and support of equipment
• Management of AME Mechanical Workshop
• Management and maintenance of safety systems
• Management of workshop equipment and consumables
• Support marine science cruises and field work
• Work with users to develop ideas and designs to solve scientific problems
• Work with other staff in teams
• Use a range of suppliers and sub-contractors to produce equipment
