Farm School Manager
£35,000 to £50,000 depending on experience
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to lead our original Farm, Nethercott House in Devon, as its next Farm School Manager. After 40 years of pioneering work offering city children an immersive experience of life on a working farm we are looking for someone with the vision, passion and inspiration to take over the reins and lead Nethercott as we look forward to our next 40 years.
You will have boundless enthusiasm for introducing city children to the wonders of the countryside, food and farming. You'll love our aims and our ethos, and be full of ideas about how we can develop our offer still further whilst protecting the core of what we do.
We will give you the freedom and flexibility to do your job to the best of your ability, a fantastic and well-respected residential in a glorious part of the country, and a well-connected and dedicated team of staff and network of Trustees to support you in the role. And, of course, a lovely pair of steel toe-capped wellies...
Who are we?
Farms for City Children is an education charity founded in 1976 by Clare and Michael Morpurgo to offer urban children from all over the country a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real farm in the heart of the countryside. We provide an intense, 'learning through doing' experience of a different life for children who may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world.
We have three farms - in Devon, Gloucestershire and Pembrokeshire - and every year around 3,250 children from towns and cities across the UK come to spend the most memorable week of their lives with us.
What does the role involve?
- Managing all staff, resources, activities and facilities on site.
- Providing an inspiring and safe residential experience for visiting schools, the memory and impact of which will stay with the children and teachers long after they've left the farm.
- Creating a warm, child-centred environment in which visiting children can flourish
- Developing the educational value and content of the residential experience.
You will lead the dedicated farm and house staff at Nethercott House, and work closely with our commercial farming partners, at an exceptionally exciting time in Farm's for City Children's development. You can find out more about us at www.farmsforcitychildren.org and on social media.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a dynamic, boundlessly energetic leader who is seeking a challenging but incredibly rewarding position which they can really make their own. Our Farm School Managers thrive on variety, and are equally at home out on the farm with a group of children, organising timetables and rotas, dealing with visiting teachers, volunteers, donors and builders, planning exciting and relevant new sessions for children, budgeting, line-managing, evaluating this year's activities and planning for the years ahead. They are trained teachers, or have considerable relevant experience of working with children aged 7-11. They are, above all, absolutely passionate about what we do and able to translate that into excellent and inspiring practice
How do I apply or find out more?
We would ideally like the candidate to start at the beginning of the academic year, in September 2017 if not before. Shortlisting will take place week commencing 17th April and interviews will be held week commencing 8th May onwards. There will be a two stage interview process, including the opportunity to spend time at Nethercott, working with the children and meeting the staff.
To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter detailing your suitability for the role to us via the APPLY BUTTON.
Please ensure you state in your application where you saw the post advertised. The closing date for this vacancy is midday on Friday 7th April.
