Location: Near Portsmouth

Salary/Rate: GBP40,000 - GBP50,000

Clearance: Government Security Clearance or Willing to Undergo

Lead Software Engineer - Permanent - Near Portsmouth - GBP40,000 - GBP50,000

Primarily working with the Product Team that is responsible for a suite of Command and Control software applications. The software is operational within a broad range of architectures, by a number of customers, in countries throughout the world and is used for military operations, homeland defence, crisis management and conflict resolution.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Take full responsibility for a large work packages and development activities
  • Responsibility for Requirements Analysis and Definition
  • Understand the scope of the customer requirements, and identify if software design meets or is exceeding the requirement
  • Identify changes to requirements which may provide an opportunity for additional stretch proposals
  • Act as the Principal Design Authority for a work package, providing technical guidance to more junior engineers during the production of Operational Concept Descriptions (Applications Specifications), Design Descriptions and Test Descriptions and during the Implementation phase
  • Supervise/assist more junior members of the team to carry out software production activities as required
  • Review and comment constructively on other engineers' work; ie design, test and user documentation as well as code reviews
  • Take responsibility for ensuring work packages are completed on schedule and within budget
  • Take responsibility for configuration management of software
  • Assist with the set up/design of a project's software and hardware development environment
  • Assist with integration and configuration management within a project
  • Take responsibility for maintenance of the project development environment
  • Build up technical knowledge of company's existing products and any new product and project developments
  • Carry out all above tasks in accordance with our client's Quality System and published Software Production processes

Organisational Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the production of technical sections of bids, proposals and studies
  • Provide technical assistance to Sales and Capture, particularly in supporting the preparation of bids, and assisting with customer demonstrations
  • Take responsibility for the installation and support of fielded systems along with the estimation of work packages and other engineering management activities
  • Maintain records of team's progress against plans and provide formal progress reports on the team's activities, including risk status and costs-to-complete, to the Project Manager
  • Take responsibility for the Supervision, Training and development of other employees as required. May be requested to act as a mentor to more junior employees; and provide technical management to the team
  • Undertake any other reasonable task as requested

Essential criteria:

  • Proven commercial experience of architecting, developing and testing complex web applications
  • Experience of both and front and Back End development (with a bias towards Front End dev) using the following technologies: Java (J2E), Spring - Spring MVC, HTML, JavaScript - experience with Dojo Toolkit, Service Oriented Architecture - including SOAP, and Restful Services, XML, JSON

Desired criteria:

  • Experience of UK Government working practices
  • Understanding of developing application for use within secure environments
  • The ideal candidate would also have experience of the following technologies/applications: Maven, Ant, Test Driven Development (TDD), Selenium, QUnit, Groovy
  • Applicants must be able to hold and maintain UK Government clearances
