JOB TITLE: Broadcast Journalist


SALARY & BENEFITS: Depending on skills and experience


WORKING HOURS: Monday - Friday plus evening and weekend work when required



THE COMPANY: Our client is a publicly funded broadcaster for Scotland. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Broadcast Journalist to join their team based in Portree.




THE ROLE: This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person. It will allow the successful person to cement VJ skills within a vibrant and lively community. The Skye reporter has access to a strong Technical network to support the day-to-day operation. The role allows a lot of out-and-about work, free from the constraints of office-based activity, in one of the most picturesque areas in the world. As a solo reporter, the successful person also has a great opportunity to increase their professional profile as the 'go-to' person for NCA and London when big stories break in Skye or Wester Ross.



Key responsibilities for the Broadcast Journalist role is to include:-
  • Sourcing and developing original stories from Skye and Wester Ross for Radio, TV and online.
  • Finding suitable contributors for stories
  • Finding and editing stories for radio and TV
  • Covering the agenda in Skye and Wester Ross
  • Write material for programme scripts, bulletins, links, and online - exercising editorial judgement, maintaining professional journalistic standards and adhering to my client's policy and legal and contractual guidelines
  • Undertake interviewing and reporting duties, under the broad direction of SBJ's and ANEs for Online, Radio and Television.
  • Operate a wide range of information technology, including ENPS etc.
  • Operate VJ style cameras

THE CANDIDATE: The successful applicant for the Broadcast Journalist role will be able to work co-operatively as part of a small team. You will need to work accurately and to tight deadlines. You will need to be able to influence and persuade others and have excellent communication skills. You will need to live within a commutable distance to Portree or be willing to re-locate.



Key skills and experience for the Broadcast Journalist role:-

  • Fluent in Gaelic with a superior level of Gaelic literacy
  • First class news judgement
  • In depth knowledge of the Scottish news agenda and of Scotland's political systems and institutions
  • In depth knowledge of the news agenda for the Highlands and Islands and an understanding of the institutions and issues relevant to the area
  • A good broadcasting voice and on-air skills
  • Good writing skills
  • Ability to originate and develop programme stories and to make contacts and bring in original news
  • Basic understanding of the BBC's Producer Guidelines and awareness of legal considerations applying to all types of output.
  • Ability to develop additional production skills and ideally some knowledge of production techniques in radio or television
