We are seeking a talented and motivated science editor/writer for nanotechweb.org, our specialist news service for researchers in the nanotechnology community. The position is available for a fixed term to cover for maternity leave.

Working within our award-winning journalism team, you'll be writing, commissioning and publishing top-quality news stories that highlight the most exciting research breakthroughs. You'll be joining us at an exciting time, as we redevelop, rescope and relaunch nanotechweb.org to boost our engagement with researchers working across all areas of materials science and technology.

You'll need excellent writing skills, in particular the ability to convey complex scientific ideas with clarity and flair, plus you'll need to engage with scientific leaders in academia and industry to identify story ideas and turn them into accurate and accessible news coverage. You'll also need excellent organizational skills to co-ordinate multiple editorial outputs, as well as contributions to the site from a network of freelance and volunteer contributors.

To be successful in this position you will need: 

  • A degree in a physical sciences or engineering subject, plus a basic understanding of how scientific research is done
  • Excellent editing and writing skills
  • A demonstrable interest in all areas of materials science and its applications, and the ability to rapidly learn about new areas of the subject
  • Ability to generate ideas and work with limited supervision to produce the required quality and quantity of output
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of people (including colleagues, freelance contributors, academic researchers, and senior engineers and managers in industry)
  • Ability to manage work and conflicting priorities in order to meet multiple deadlines
  • Commercial awareness and an ability to suggest and implement website innovations that support the site's publishing objectives
