Senior Scientist
The purpose of this role is to primarily conduct scientific experiments as necessary within dedicated scientific teams. It is likely that the individual will be progressing from a Scientist role from within the company, or will have significant scientific role experience from elsewhere. They will be relatively independent in both the conduct and analysis of their experiments, but will still require guidance from their line manager. This role may or may not involve project management or line management of others. Functional focus: The Cell Process Development team is concerned with the improvement and automation of our T cell manufacturing process, as well as process adaptation and innovation for new products coming from our clients pipeline and research groups (incl. Autoimmune and Stem Cell). Cell products from individual stages within the manufacturing process are characterised in phenotypical and functional assays. Process changes are then tech transferred to our global manufacturing teams.
Key responsibilities
Conducting experiments in cell culture and analytical labs (50%)
Experiment planning, data analyses and recording results (15%)
Meetings and discussions (10%)
Routine lab maintenance (5%)
Project management or line management of others (20%, This percentage may rise or fall depending on requirements)
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Undergraduate degree in Life sciences or related discipline
- Relevant post-graduate experience, typically with at least 7 years' or equivalent, preferably including an MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific area.
- Ability to work independently after training
- Aseptic cell culture experience, ideally large-scale and/or with primary human T cells
- Good understanding of cell biology
Practical experience in relevant cell biology assays
Desirable
- Experience in an industrial lab environment
- Process development experience GMP/GLP experience
Skills and Competencies
Required
- Disciplined, innovative, flexible and highly motivated
- Strong team player but with the ability to work independently
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) are essential, as the team regularly interacts with research, preclinical and manufacturing groups internally and externally with CMOs and CROs.
- Ability to follow SOPs
- Ability to write SOPs, study protocols and reports
- Problem solving abilities
- Good time management
- High attention to detail
- Computer literate and ability to familiarise with different IT and database systems
- Use of standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, centrifuges).
Advanced experimental design skills to address problems and scientific questions
Desirable
- Use of more specialist lab equipment (flow cytometers, cell counting equipment, cell washing and concentration equipment, bioreactors, ELISPOT and ELISA readers)
Technical interest
Management of own experiments (with some input from line manager).
May lead projects in a matrix management setting.
May have a direct report, subject to company expansion.
May help compile budgetary requirements.
Occasional travel for
tech transfer purposes and other collaborative work might be required.
