Job Description:

Post: Life Skills Support 
Reports To: Registered Manager/ House Leader 
Location: Bromley
Salary: £17,935 per Annum        

The closing date is 20th February 2017.

Primary Objective:

To ensure so that the students’ experience of Dorton College and the local community is rich, varied and demonstrably contributes to their developing independence and emotional well being. 

Key Tasks and Main Duties:

• Plan and deliver life skills activities in small groups and 1:1 sessions, which meet the agreed objectives and personalised life skills needs of our students with vision impairment and additional special needs and/ or disabilities.  
• Be fully conversant with the RSBC ethos regarding the expertise around vision impairment. 
• Encourage students to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their own learning, and for directing their care and support.
• Organise stimulating activities in the house and community that are appropriate to the students’ needs and take into account their hopes and aspirations; ensure they are well planned and risk assessed. 
• Take responsibility for the recording of students’ target tracking, progress and achievement. 
• Responsibility for life skills environment which meets all Health and Safety and Infection Control requirements. 
• Contribute to the safeguarding of all students by having an awareness of signs of abuse, e-safety and an understanding of relevant procedure and protocol. 
• Responsibility for the administration and storage of medication in line with the Medication Policy and to a standard that meets the requirements.
• Support and promote the use of IT into learning and living activities, to allow students  to advance and to stimulate their learning. 
• Ensure that equality and diversity is embedded in all activities.
• To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the Society’s students and all other children and young people/ vulnerable adults that have contact with the organisation, challenging any poor practice.

Person Specification:

Educational or Professional Qualifications:

Essential:

• Level 3 NVQ in a related subject (Care).
• Minimum of Level 2 Qualification in Literacy and Level 1 in Numeracy working  towards Level 2 within 6 months of appointment.

Desirable:

• Grade 1 and/ or 2 Braille.
• Qualifications at Level 3 and above. 

Skills, Experience and Knowledge:

Essential:

• Knowledge and application of a how the support role contributes to raising standards by promoting independent learning and development in the residential environment for students with vision impairment. 
• Knowledge and understanding of the impact that vision impairment can have on emotional wellbeing and strategies to help in overcoming this. 
• Knowledge of the requirements of inspection frameworks (Common Inspection Framework, CQC) and other relevant legislation.
• Understanding and awareness of individual needs and ability to adjust communication methods accordingly. 
• Innovative use of resources and materials including IT packages that support students’ learning. 
• Demonstrable commitment to the developing work of RSBC and a flexible approach to working hours and location.
