The Company

Our client is a market leader in the niche area of civil engineering within the water industry. They are looking to recruit a Company Accountant. Reporting to the Group Finance Director, the post-holder will have primary responsibility for preparing accurate monthly management accounts, payroll, cash flow forecasting, drawing up of annual budgets, analysis and statutory accounts as well as assisting the Directors with any other ad hoc projects.

The day-to-day duties

  • Process staff salary and pension payments, administer PAYE with HMRC.
  • The Company Accountant will be required to provide tax advice to all staff as required, using external accountancy practice to obtain the information.
  • Periodically audit expenses sheets and advise Director of any discrepancies or concerns.
  • Sales ledger - manage input and allocate payments in for sales invoices, including liaison with Commercial Department to ensure payments are added to correct sales ledger and invoices.
  • Manage aged debtors' list including liaison with Commercial Department and regular contact with customer Accounts Payable departments.
  • CIS and VAT returns - All CIS and VAT returns to be submitted to HMRC via Sage 200.
  • Purchase Ledger - manage the processing of all supplier and subcontractor payments through Sage 200; optimise cash flow through maximising creditors without jeopardising supplier relationships.
  • Conduct a quarterly audit of petty cash payments and advise Directors of any discrepancies or concerns.

  • The Company Accountant will carry out bank reconciliation on an ongoing basis, reporting the actual reconciled cash position to the Directors weekly, or when the group bank facility will exceed the overdraft limit.
  • Produce profit and loss/balance sheet information on a monthly basis and maintain the management accounts.
  • Maintain chart of accounts and produce new COA as required by the reporting needs of the Board.
  • Compile and manage fixed assets on Sage 200.
  • Arrange and administer HP finance at the request of the Directors.
  • Prepare for and assist auditors with year end auditing of accounts.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications required:

ESSENTIAL

  • CIMA Qualified Accountant
  • A minimum of 5 years' post- qualification experience.
  • An excellent communicator, able to deal confidently with Directors and staff face-to- face, in writing and on the telephone.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work alone using initiative to solve problems and complete daily tasks.
  • Able to work flexibly in line with business requirements with a willingness to learn and adapt to change.
  • Proven planning and organisation skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and manage competing and conflicting deadlines.
  • Display a positive attitude and be committed to consistently maintaining the brand.
  • Car driver due to rural location of office and occasional travel to other offices.

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience gained from within an SME.
  • Previous experience of managing a team.
