About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Surveyor to join the talented Commercial team in Glasgow, Scotland.

As the Senior Surveyor you will be responsible for achieving accurate financial control of individual sites in accordance with Company Policies, with particular reference to: monthly valuations on all contracts, calculation of subcontractor liabilities, analysis of computer costs, comprising labour, materials, plant supervision and other overheads and completion of CBR reports and submission to the Commercial Manager.

Some of the main responsibilities within the role include:

  • Being involved in a contract from inception and is responsible for maintaining the financial control of a contract from budget brief to completion. This is to include obtaining quotations from subcontractors and selecting and negotiating the final price and contract terms in accordance with the Company's procedures and policies.
  • Provide monthly valuations as the work progresses to include cost budget recommendations and reports to show progress against the construction budget each month.
  • Required to obtain quotations from subcontractors in accordance with Company procedures and policies.
  • Required to make a measure or evaluation of each subcontractor work for the purpose of making a monthly/fortnightly interim payment to the subcontractor and to input for the cost/budget comparison.
  • Responsible for agreeing subcontractor's final accounts on completion of the contract and for reporting to the Commercial Manager.
  • Preparing and signing a requisition for each interim or final payment to be made to the subcontractors and will pass this for countersignature prior to the release of payment.
  • Providing costing advice to Site Managers, Architects/Engineers, Sales and Marketing and subordinate members of staff related to proposed designs. This is particularly relevant to ground works, substructures, roof coverings and customers' extras.
  • Required to use initiative and make decisions within the limits imposed by the agreed budget. Any proposed expenditure outside the budget will be referred to a higher level of management. The post holder will be responsible for formulating tender enquiries and subsequent appraisals of quotations received. Discretion is critical when dealing with matters for reference to or discussion with the Regional Management.
  • Important decisions may be taken by Management on the cost budget reconciliation statements and on the reports made by the post holder on the tenders and quotations received from subcontractors.
  • The information held by the post holder on the construction budget and on building costs is confidential and discretion is required at all times.
  • Required to have developed a working knowledge of Information Technology commensurate with fulfilling the requirements of the role.
  • Ensure sufficiently knowledgeable on company standard specification and details such that subcontractors and subordinate members of staff can be correctly briefed.
  • Chair pre-start meeting with selected subcontractors. Contracts Manager and Site Manager to emphasise our requirements prior to placing subcontract.
  • Ensure complete familiarity with all National and Regional agreements.
  • Prepare VCs for allocated projects so that costs can be accurately reported.
  • In conjunction with the Site Manager and Materials/Plant Controller, the post holder will be required to progress the delivery of Subcontract resource in order to comply with the relevant Construction Programme.
  • Required to resolve as may be necessary any discrepancies which may arise between orders and sums claimed. Further required to make decisions on this account and authorise payments resulting from information and knowledge obtained.
  • Required to attend monthly Site Meetings with the Project Team in order to review general progress on site and to decide on any future action necessary.
  • Required to liaise with Architects before and during the contract to ensure that proper specifications are obtained to deadlines identified by the Release Date Schedule and that scheduling and provision of Subcontractors and Materials are correctly maintained against these specifications, particular attention should be made to non-standard items.
  • Complete all cost budget reports in line with the workflow requirements.
  • Arrange Job Specific, site generated information flow from Site Manager via Contracts Manager (i.e. level information, muck-away records, contra charges, output records etc.)

About you
In order to be successful within this role, you must be educated to a minimum of an HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying. You will be able to demonstrate clear analytical working practices and have the ability to work on their own or as part of a team and will be able to programme and prioritise your own workload.

This is a challenging role that demands good communication skills and it is essential that you have a solid understanding of groundworks, is confident with complex engineering solutions and can converse with contractors, colleagues and other professionals. This role is office based with a requirement for regular site visits as driven by project commitments.
