Non-Executive Members – Food Standards Agency

The Secretary of State for Health is seeking to appoint Non-Executive Members to the Food Standards Agency.

Food is important to all of us and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) plays a critical role in identifying, regulating and enforcing food law. The FSA is the non-ministerial government department responsible for looking after consumers interests in relation to food and their work continues to be in sharp focus after 15 years in the front line of food safety.

This is an exciting and challenging time for the FSA. They have won recognition for restoring the trust of UK consumers in the way food safety is regulated, and have an ambitious Strategy for 2015 to 2020 to fulfil their vision of food we can trust and to continue to put consumers first in everything we do. Regrettably, ‘food we can trust’ is not a done deal. There are about 1 million foodborne illnesses within the UK each year with around 6,500 hospitalisations. The non-executive Board is ultimately accountable for the delivery of this Strategy.

All candidates will have an awareness of consumer interests in relation to food and how the global food system is changing, with a demonstrable commitment to putting the customer first.

Candidates will also need to demonstrate an understanding of how to achieve significant change whilst operating across complex networks.

Ideally, candidates will have experience in complex international business or governmental issues; leadership of complex change management; insight into public health in relation to food; understanding of SME business needs and issues; or veterinary science, however this is not essential.

Remuneration will be £10,772 per annum for a time commitment of approximately 30 days per annum.

The Secretary of State for Health determines the length of appointment, which will be for up to a maximum of four years.
