Primary Objective:
This role is responsible for the Society’s press strategy and for delivering steady and attention capturing stories for external audiences that will significantly raise the profile of the charity and the problem we are seeking to resolve.
Key Tasks and Main Duties:
• To develop and implement a press strategy which raises awareness of the consequences of childhood sight loss.
• To manage Press and PR activity across the charity and a range of channels to secure national and local media coverage.
• To work directly with fundraising and services teams to increase awareness to support acquisition activity of donors and beneficiaries.
• To work with the Digital and Content Manager to identify, create and manage a bank of case studies for PR and fundraising activity.
• To be the lead contact for Press and PR, as part of press office duties.
• To respond to opportunities in the media as they arise.
• To build and maintain active relationships with key journalists, enabling proactive pitching of stories.
• To run PR campaigns in line with the annual strategy.
• To be responsible for the recruitment and relationship management of charity ambassadors.
• To be an active member of the Senior Management Team in the Fundraising & Marketing Department.
• To ensure that equality and diversity is embedded in all activities.
• To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the Society’s learners / clients and all other children and young people / vulnerable adults that have contact with the organisation.
Person Specification:
Qualifications:
• A graduate or equivalent and ideally membership of a relevant professional body
Key Skills & Experience:
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines and multi-task
• Experience of raising the profile and cause of a not-for-profit organisation
• Proven experience in a PR or news related role
• Demonstrable understanding of what makes a story relevant to target audiences
• A proven track record of identifying the right targets and selling in your work on a national and local level
• Excellent media contacts and significant experience of delivering headline grabbing PR campaigns and / or news coverage
• A skilled communicator with excellent writing skills
• Significant experience of working with high profile supporters to help maximise the impact of our work
• Confident with a proven ability to build productive relationships at different levels across the organisation
• Team player
