LOCATION: Portsmouth, Hampshire



JOB TITLE: Outreach Worker (Maternity Cover)



SALARY & BENEFITS: GBP9.55 per hour



WORKING HOURS: 16 hours per week weighted to term time.



THE COMPANY: Our client is a successful Portsmouth based registered charity providing a toy library service and other community resources for children, their families and carers.



THE ROLE: The Outreach Worker is employed to encourage, support and enable 'Hard to Reach Families' attending Connors Toy Library Community Groups. To work as part of the Connors Toy Library team.



Key Responsibilities of an Outreach Worker to include:-


  • To attract new members.
  • To engage with families attending Toy Library Sessions
  • To play with children and parents during Toy library sessions, promoting play opportunities and positive parenting
  • Oversee Volunteers supporting Toy Library Sessions, co-ordinating training needs as required for Volunteers
  • To liaise with other service providers to promote the Toy Library provision.
  • To oversee the setting up, running and packing away of Toy Library sessions, as required.
  • Promote borrowing of Toys by service users, through play opportunities
  • Refer identified families needed extra support to our Outreach Provision
  • You will be expected to attend appropriate training as required by legislation and your line manager.
  • In all cases to liaise with other professionals.
  • Any other duties or responsibilities that may be allocated from time to time by your line manager.
  • To produce evidence of contacts with carers, child carers, special needs families, groups attended contact with other professionals, signposting and any other data required for monitoring purposes.

THE CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will hold an NVQ 2/3 or equivalent in Early Years Child Care and Development, or be working towards this or similar. They must be able to produce and present written reports. The successful Outreach Worker will have good organisational skills, a methodical and accurate approach and the ability to work to deadlines, prioritising workloads. Our client is looking for someone who has the knowledge of the range of services, statutory and voluntary available to children, young people and families that has good interpersonal skills (sensitivity, listening skills, tact, clarity of thought and communication, both written and verbal, and a good sense of humour.



Key experience essential for the role of Outreach Worker based in Portsmouth:


  • Must live within a commutable distance of Portsmouth.
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence with access to your own transport. Must also hold or be willing to add business insurance onto their existing insurance policy.
  • Have an NVQ 2/3 or equivalent in Early Years Child Care and Development, or be working towards this or similar.
  • Have a working knowledge of Health and Safety requirements and appropriate first aid or be prepared to undertake training.
  • Carry out all responsibilities and activities within an equal opportunities framework. Ensure that equality of opportunity is encouraged.
  • Be physically fit as the job involves walking and lifting, carrying, packing/unpacking crates of toys.
  • Have the knowledge of the range of services, statutory and voluntary available to children, young people and families.
  • Must be willing to undertake a DBS check every 3 years.
