At the Animal and Plant Health Agency we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.

Our Mycoplasma Team has a key role to play.

Detecting and identifying mycoplasmas from veterinary investigations, they aim for accurate and prompt diagnosis.

They also engage in vital research.

As a Scientific Laboratory Assistant for the team, you will support all aspects of their work.

This means you will help to improve methods of detection, diagnosis, characterisation and - perhaps most importantly - our understanding of both endemic and exotic mycoplasma species.

Your support for diagnostic and commercial work will take various forms - from carrying out culture, PCR, DGGE and serological testing, to assisting with the preparation of kits and other reagents.

Crucially, you will perform laboratory administrative duties that keep the team’s work running smoothly forward.

Along the way, you will develop a range of scientific knowledge in this field.

To join the team, you will need a basic knowledge of microbiology, preferably combined with some relevant experience in a laboratory setting.

You will certainly be a highly organised and self- motivated individual with experience in the use of computer software including Microsoft Office.

A team player with good communication skills, you are keen to understand the difference you can make to achieving the team’s goals in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
