Mechanical Packing Team Leader
About Riverford
We're mad about organic veg. It's at the core of everything we do. We love to grow it, pack it into boxes and deliver it to customers' doorsteps around the UK. This takes a lot of brilliant people, with a range of skills and knowledge.
Riverford began in 1986, with a few acres of veg, a wheelbarrow and a beaten up 2CV for deliveries. We've grown into a successful e-commerce business, with four farms, three pack houses, a fleet of vans and drivers, a wholesaler, butchery, organic restaurant and pub. We employ people across many areas including IT, Logistics, Sales, HR, Finance and Marketing (and more besides).
Our culture and values set us apart from other businesses. Riverford is a friendly, informal place to work, with a passionate, entrepreneurial spirit. We're committed to providing a fair deal for growers, customers and staff.
What you'll be doing
As the Mechanical Packing team leader you will be looking after a team of around 5 staff, working with our multihead weighing machine. This accurately weighs out our salad leaves, and other seasonal veg before sealing it into bags which are then ready to go to into our veg boxes or straight into dispatch. On average we pack in the region of 45,000 items a week.
You will ultimately take responsibility for the quality of the items that come from your department, instilling a sense of pride in your team; communicating to them the importance of accuracy, pace and well-presented items. You will be the first point of call when the machine has technical issues and be responsible for escalating it appropriately and ensuring the machinery is working again as soon as possible.
You'll establish a good relationship with your team, keeping them motivated and being an approachable point of contact for any issues. You will look after holiday requests, staffing levels, health and safety, attendance and annual appraisals.
Each day you will need to complete your administration tasks which includes processing and closing daily works orders on AX, inputting data for your daily KPIs, your team attendance management, and planning for the following week. Your team may move to help other departments within production and it is important that you remain accountable for them and ensure that they complete their responsibilities for the day.
You'll need strong communication skills; talking to your supervisor or other departments around the business to tackle problems and supply issues as they arise.
This is a permanent contract, 39 hours a week usually Sunday to Thursday from 6.30am to finish. Based at Wash Barn, Buckfastleigh, Devon, TQ11 0JU
Your Responsibilities
- Ensuring accurate and timely completion of daily production requirements
- Setting up and effectively running Multihead Weigher and Form Fill Bagger
- Train other members of staff how to operate the machinery and ensure they are health and safety trained and compliant
- Prompt communication of any problems or issues across all departments; always ensuring the box line team leaders, production supervisor and procurement are kept up to date.
- Delivering high quality well-presented produce; constantly monitoring quality and accuracy and considering our customers' needs to produce a well presented item.
- To hold a weekly meeting with your team explaining new products, changes in product specification and explaining anything else which they may need to know and listening to feedback.
- Ensure accurate completion of timesheets and attendance records for your department
- Assist in introducing new members of the team and carry out the departmental part of the induction, completing the necessary paperwork and returning it to HR.
- Resource management; Working with your supervisor, making sure the area is properly resourced with the staff and materials required for the day and weeks work.
- Attend any workshops and training as requested to aid your development.
- Assist in other areas of the business as required.
- Although we try to keep rules to a minimum we do ask that you ensure that you familiarise yourself with our H&S procedures and ensure that you are aware of your own responsibilities in line with H&S and consider the safety of those around you.
