Job Title:                     Assistant Examination Invigilator

Reports to:                 The Bursar, but with general responsibility to the Examinations Officer.

Hourly rate:               £10.03 per hour, to be paid monthly on or before the 28th of each month.  This includes a 13% element of pay in lieu of paid holiday.

Holiday:                       Leave may be taken during School holidays, the dates of which are published in the School Calendar.

Location:                    King Edward’s School, North Road, Bath

Hours of Work:        Will be as required and in accordance with the formal examination timetable.  Each exam session is different, and invigilation support may be required from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm.  Invigilators would not normally be expected to work for more than 6 hours a day.  Successful candidates will be expected to provide details of non-availability with the exam periods.

The School:     King Edward’s School, founded in 1552, is an Independent Co-educational Day School; there are currently approximately 770 pupils in the Senior School (including 230 pupils in the Sixth Form), 180 in the Junior School and 90 in the Pre-Prep.

The main school site is situated on a privileged 14-acre site on the south-eastern edge of Bath, just below the University, with fine views of the City Centre and surrounding hills.  In addition, there are attractive playing fields one mile from the school at Bathampton and the Pre-Prep is located in Weston near to Bath’s Royal Victoria Park.

Job Purpose:

To invigilate external examinations in accordance with the Joint Council for General Qualifications’ regulations and carry out associated administrative and clerical duties.

To work with our experienced team of public examination invigilators at the School.  Candidates should have effective communication skills, be well organised, reliable and able to work flexible hours during the exam period (May/June 2017).

Previous experience is preferred.  Successful candidates will be required to attend a training session. 

Main Activities:

  1. Preparation of the examination room.
  2. Distributing seating cards, writing paper, equipment and examination papers as required.
  3. Writing details that are to be displayed to candidates on front board (eg exam length).
  4. Assisting in admitting candidates in a quiet and orderly manner.
  5. Complete a seating plan.
  6. Supervising the examination.
  7. Ensuring that candidates who have special needs or who are entitled to extra time are correctly supervised, and their entitlements respected.
  8. Ensuring that candidates who are using lap top computers are correctly supervised, and that arrangements are made for printing in accordance with school practice.
  9. Completing Attendance Registers.
  10. Supervising ‘clash’ candidates between examinations as directed.
  11. Collecting and checking completed scripts.
  12. Tidying desks and equipment at the end of the examination.
  13. Preparation for next examination session if required.
  14. Occasional office administrative duties to include assistance with dispatch.

    Candidates should possess the following attributes:

  • Be responsible, punctual, calm and approachable individuals.
  • Be well organised and able to show organisational ability.
  • Be flexible, adaptable to change and able to respond appropriately to a wide variety of unexpected situations
  • Be interested in working in a school environment and as part of a team.
  • Have a reasonable degree of physical fitness in order to carry papers, etc., over a large site built on a hillside.
  • Invigilators are required to wear ‘business dress’ to promote a formal atmosphere within the examination room.
  • Ability to work in a way that promotes safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
