The Company

Our client is a market leader in the niche area of civil engineering within the water industry. Their company's success can be attributed to their extensive knowledge and experience gained from working closely with their clients to deliver a range of cost-effective engineering solutions including the repair, refurbishment and maintenance of water company reservoirs, and associated assets along with the new construction of new assets to values up to £2m.

The day-to-day duties

The Accounts Assistant will be reporting to the Company Accountant, the post-holder will assist the Finance team with day to day finance activities including Purchase Ledger, Credit Control, Sales Ledger and other ad-hoc duties.

  • The Accounts Assistant will be responsible for purchase ledger activities including processing payments, reconciling statements and preparing reports.
  • Be the first point of contact for all supplier queries.
  • Responsible for accurately allocating client payments in a timely fashion.
  • Overseeing the payment of sales invoices including chasing outstanding payments as required.
  • Process cash book payments and employee expense claims
  • Enter contra charge adjustments
  • Control bank reconciliations
  • Maintain up to date corporate credit card transactions and reconciliations
  • Responsible for Petty Cash
  • Construction Industry Scheme Accounting
  • Maintaining numerous accounting spreadsheets including ones concerned with fixed assets and company vehicles

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications required:

  • The Accounts Assistant will require experience of working in a busy Finance office with good basic training in accounts (i.e., understanding of double entry principles).
  • Solid experience of ledger accounting
  • Educated to GCSE level including passes in Maths and English (A-C)
  • A good communicator, able to deal confidently with a variety of people face-to- face, in writing and on the telephone.
  • Able to work alone using own initiative to solve problems and complete daily tasks.
  • Display a positive attitude and be committed to high levels of accuracy.
  • Able to work flexibly in line with business requirements.
  • Strong IT skills, in particular MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Proven planning and organisation skills with ability to prioritise workloads
  • Car driver due to rural location of office and occasional travel to other offices.
