GENERAL KITCHEN ASSISTANT

Responsible to:
The Catering Manager, or the Deputy Catering Manager.

£7.31 per hour . Additionally, overtime payments will be made for extra hours. A retainer of half basic salary will be paid during school holidays, after you have completed the probationary period in your new post. This retainer is refundable by you if you leave the employment of the school within two weeks of the start of any term.

Hours of work:
Term-time only, working 36 weeks. Preferably 9.00am – 3.00pm, with half hour unpaid break, 27.5 hours per week, lunch provided, although some flexibility in working hours is available for the right candidate. Some overtime working evenings and Saturdays will be expected from time to time. Uniform provided and free parking on site.

Outline of Duties
Responsible for day to day Kitchen Duties as detailed below.

Allocation of Duties

1. Food Preparation
Prepare vegetables for cooking or salads, and prepare other food required for school lunches, breaks, games teas, special functions, etc.

2. Cooking
Assist the cooking staff with basic cooking when necessary.

3. Serving
Serve lunches to staff and pupils at the servery; deliver meals or refreshments to other parts of the School as required.

4. Storage
Assist with unpacking food and stacking shelves in larder, filling freezers etc.

5. Washing Up
Collect up all crockery, cutlery, utensils and equipment and wash by hand, sterilise or machine wash and rinse, after school lunches, functions etc, and at other times as required.

6. Cleaning
Clean all equipment fittings, windows, walls, working surfaces, cupboards, floors, cloakroom, storage rooms etc, as directed. Wash towels, tea towels, oven dish and floor cloths as directed.

7. Disposal of Waste
Dispose of waste food to bins as directed, flatten tins for recycling and stack up combustible waste materials for collection by cleaners.

8. General
• Any other tasks as may be required by the Catering Manager.
• Exhibit an ability to work in a way that promotes safety and wellbeing of children and young people.


In addition to the above duties, catering staff are expected to maintain a high standard of personal and general hygiene. Rules of the Kitchen must be observed by wearing uniform as supplied, safety shoes and hats at all times. No jewellery to be worn. All staff must hold a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate. Training in Basic Food Hygiene and NVQ training will be offered.

The School’s NO SMOKING POLICY must be observed at all times on the School site.
