Research Assistant - Genetic Toxicology, Harrogate
Covance, a leading global drug development services company, is looking for a Research Assistant - Genetic Toxicology to join our team based in Harrogate, on a full time basis for a 12 month contract.
The position will offer a 2016 graduate the opportunity to use cutting edge technology to study the effects of aerosols in the field of Genetic Toxicology.

The Research Assistant - Genetic Toxicology is responsible for the performance and data recording of modified Genetic Toxicology assays within the specialised exposure section. Studies within this section are performed in compliance with appropriate SOPs and regulatory (GLP and ISO) requirements. Duties include routine assay procedures, cell culture and general housekeeping associated with the day to day running of the laboratory area.
Responsibilities of our Research Assistant - Genetic Toxicology include:
- Performance of modified Genetic Toxicology assays
- General maintenance, cleaning and calibration of general and specialised equipment
- Preparation of laboratory worksheets in line with study design and protocols.
- Calculation of test article dilutions, formulation and dilution of test articles
- Scoring assay end points and the production of any related data.
- Checking raw data in study files
- General laboratory duties including ordering and disposal of consumables and solutions and daily equipment metrology
- Conduct all work in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, and specifically those regulations (GLP and/or GCP or ISO17025) specified in the study plans, protocols, or work agreements governing the work in which they are involved.
- Individuals may be required to be part of the ‘on call out of hours team’
The position involves working with potentially hazardous compounds and occasionally radiolabelled material on a daily basis. Genetically manipulated organisms may also be used. Appropriate safety procedures and precautions are therefore essential.
To become our Research Assistant - Genetic Toxicology you must have the following skills and experience:
- Educated to degree level in a Biology related scientific subject
- A scientific background and practical experience would be beneficial but not essential.
- Basic engineering experience or a hobby/interest relating to engineering would be useful but not essential.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- Communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to utilise word-processing software, databases, spreadsheet and specialised software.
- Knowledge and understanding of GLP and other regulatory guidelines.
- Knowledge of the use of ISO Standard 17025 would be beneficial
- Ability to work to tight/short deadlines is often required.
- Flexibility is essential.
- Regular overtime and weekend work
