Prison officer opportunities

HMP Swaleside, Isle of Sheppey

Up to £26,224 in the first year (includes market force supplement) + excellent benefits

Make no mistake, working in a prison isn't for everyone. The vital work our prison officers do is often challenging and can sometimes feel like it goes unnoticed. But if you do have the special blend of skills and qualities it takes, not only will we recognise the value of what you do, but it could also be one of the most life-changing moves you've ever made.

What we expect from our prison officers

There's no such thing as a typical prison officer: our people come from many different backgrounds, just like the prisoners they work with. What you will need though is empathy, self-confidence and great communication skills. That's because, no matter how challenging the situation, you'll take the time to build constructive, positive and professional relationships with often vulnerable offenders who are at the lowest point in the lives. As well as emotional resilience, you'll need physical stamina too as being a prison officer involves being on your feet for most of the day and getting involved in a variety of tasks. Finally, teamwork plays a vital role in this environment, so we‘ll expect you to be fully committed to supporting your colleagues and understand the importance of acting as one team to keep the prison, prisoners and everyone who works here safe.

What you can expect from us

If you have what we're looking for, you can expect a lot in return. For a start you'll receive a comprehensive training programme, the chance to gain professional qualifications, opportunities to progress and valuable public sector benefits, including 25 days' annual leave and a civil service pension. More than that though, for many of our prison officers it's the sense of achievement they feel when they have helped get an offender's life back on track. And that's the kind of experience you simply won't find anywhere else.
