The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic web systems developer to contribute to the development of our web-based data portal for providing discovery and access tools to a wide variety of environmental datasets created as part of the NERC Arctic Research Programme (see ).

This role would suit a recent graduate or early career software developer looking for a distinctive job that will make you stand out from the crowd. You will join a small team of web developers and data scientists who are passionate about providing open access to environmental data collected in the polar regions. This is a role where you will be making a real difference and the unique datasets that you expose will be reused by a wide variety of stakeholders both nationally and internationally.

In terms of your skills, you should have prior experience in client-side and server-side development of web-based data systems. Specifically, you should have experience with PHP and JavaScript frameworks and be able to create responsive websites that will operate on a variety of devices. Experience in working with relational databases is essential while knowledge of spatial database extensions such as PostGIS is highly desirable. You should have experience of working in a team of developers, have a sound knowledge of software development practices, and be able to listen to, and communicate well, with end-users.

Purpose:
To assist in the creation of several web-based data portals that will provide discovery, access and dissemination of environmental data collected as part of the NERC Arctic Research Programme. These portals will build on an existing in-house system that is based on Laravel 5 and PostgreSQL.

Duties:
- Work with the BAS Web and Applications team and the wider BAS Information Services group to deliver web-based systems to access, visualise and deliver environmental datasets.
- Develop access to existing internal and external data sources using appropriate tools. This will require liaising with BAS data managers and external data holders as well as end-users.
- Report progress and communicate issues to the project lead.
- Respond to end-user requests and feedback.
- Produce clear and detailed system documentation.
- To undertake other duties as requested by the Director of BAS.
