Depute Head Teacher, Kirkhill PS, 26.1 CD 18/12/16
Depute Head Teacher, Kirkhill Primary School, 35 hours per week, closing date 18th December 2016
Kirkhill Primary and Nursery School is a non - denominational school serving the community of Broxburn in West Lothian. The school was built in 1969 and was extensively refurbished in 2003 providing spacious accommodation for pupils and staff.
The design of the building is extremely flexible with the classrooms surrounding shared areas. Classroom doors hinge open allowing the learning to be extended into the shared area where pupils of various stages can collaborate, work as individuals or cooperate through play. There is a spacious gym hall and a staging area which doubles as the dining area. The nursery is housed in a separate building. Indoor space is limited due to the unusual design of the building. The nursery has its own outdoor garden space enabling the play set up indoors to be replicated outdoors thus allowing for free flow play. The main school has fairly large tarmac playgrounds and some grass areas. There is a community Multi-Use Games Area which the local community will access out of school hours and is used for outdoor P.E during the school day. The primary school has created a garden space at the rear of the building to take the learning outdoors and support pupils with ALN. The school kitchen was refurbished during Session 2014-2015 which allows for school meals to be made on the premises. The kitchen also serves Broxburn Primary School.
Our current school role is 230 arranged in 11 classes. In addition to the 11 class teachers we have a Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, Principal Teacher and a Support for Learning Teacher. RCCT is delivered by the DHT, and RCC teachers. Cover is also provided for this by the SLT taking stages together for a period of 35 minutes to allow staff to liaise with each other. The separate nursery building has the capacity for 40 morning and 30 afternoon placements. Staffing includes1 Nursery Teacher and 2 Nursery Nurses. A very successful PEEP 4 group is run by one of our Nursery Nurses during the nursery/school week and a recently started PEEP 5 group has been established and is run by one of our PSW’s.
There are 7 Pupil Support Staff deployed at various stages across the school inclusive of the nursery to support children with identified learning needs and to support whole school working. There is a 0.5 FTE Nurture Teacher who work with children across the school.
The school is focused on nurturing and developing young people with skills which will equip them for a future we do not yet fully know. Our core priority at present is raising attainment through continuing to improve our approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, the curriculum and effective self-evaluation.
The successful candidate will join a highly committed leadership team and wider community who are working together to raise attainment, and, further develop our curriculum and approaches to highly effective learning, teaching and assessment. S/he will have opportunities to be creative and imaginative in their approach to leadership and management. S/he will work in close partnership with the Head Teacher in strategic planning, effective leadership and management of the school.
This post is considered Regulated Work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scotland Act 2007.
