Overview:

First Military Recruitment are currently recruiting for a Structures Design Engineer on behalf of our client based in Birmingham. This is an excellent and exciting opportunity for a Structures Design Engineer to join one of the UK's leading highways construction companies.

Main objective:

To work within the Structures Team and deliver technical elements of projects relating to the inspection, study, design, maintenance and construction of highways structures on the road network as delegated on a project basis. Responsible for supervising the work of more junior staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Supervising the work of Graduate Engineers and Technicians within the team as required.
* Undertaking specific projects as directed by the Design Team Leader and/or Senior Design
Engineer (Structures).
* Assisting in the training and development of more junior staff.
* Carrying out site investigation, inspections, surveys and other studies and maintaining records and
preparing reports as appropriate.
* Arranging traffic surveys, land surveys, safety audits, etc. with other teams within Kier Highway Services
Ltd in accordance with the scheme programme.
* Preparing reports on identified problems and recommend suitable solutions.
* Preparing contract drawings and tender documents.
* Preparing structural calculations and designs in accordance with relevant standards and codes of
practice.
* Undertaking all health and safety activities as required under CDM regulations under supervision of the
Design Team Leader and/or Senior Design Engineer and in consultation with the CDM-C utilising
appropriate employee risk assessments.
* Preparing necessary IMS documentation under supervision of the Design Team Leader and/or Senior
Design Engineer.
* Liaising with the Police, local Highway Authority, statutory undertakers and other bodies as required.
* Maintaining good relations with the Client and other authorities, attending meetings as necessary
* Liaising with specialist staff to coordinate design inputs.
* Liaising with other senior staff in co-ordinating works.
* Assisting with project administration and control, including monitoring of costs and programme.
* Assisting with the identification of programme delivery, resources and budgets for the annual Business.
* Identifying opportunities for additional work from existing and new Clients.
* Complying with the Quality and Environmental Management Systems.
* Carrying out before and after studies to determine the effectiveness of measures and carrying out
specific items of research as directed.
* Keeping the Design Team Leader and/or Senior Design Engineer apprised of activities.
* Actively promoting compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental requirements in the workplace,
setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with the general
Health & Safety and Environmental responsibilities
* Performing other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.

Skills and Qualifications:

* Degree/HND, HNC or equivalent qualification, relevant construction experience in respect of
Maintenance of Highway Structures in a design office or on site and working towards and close to
achieving Incorporated or Chartered status of a recognised engineering or technical body.
* Ideally the candidate will have proven experience in CAD including proven RC detailing.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision but seeking advice where necessary and taking
project ownership for delegated duties as well as demonstrating mentoring skills.
* Able to undertaking site inspections to Highways Agency requirements and able to provide a relevant
demonstration of experience, expertise and competence for the tasks required.
* Experience in the use of MS Word and MS Excel.
* Capable of undertaking inspections within rough terrain in inclement weather on a motorway network
environment including the production of technical reports.
* Have an appreciation/knowledge of relevant highway standards and documents.
* A current UK FULL driving license is essential for the role as site visits will be required
