Job Position: Principal Engineer Embedded Systems

Job Status: Permanent

Qualifications:

Educated to a degree level preferably with the focus being either control system engineering, software engineering or an embedded system or have the relevant demonstrable skills through experience.

Experience:

Essential

A wide range of experience in an embedded system environment and must be able to show evidence of this experience. Likely to have worked in a supplier or customer.

Experience with design/support/specification of embedded systems.

Experience testing and test design of embedded systems.

Experience of hardware in the loop / software in the loop / model in the loop environments.

V Model lifecycle and approach and associated tools (DOORs?)

Bug and issue tracking.

Source code version control.

Software coding to appropriate standards (i.e MISRA C).

CAN Networks and tools.

Model based software/control development - Matlab, simulink etc.

Automated testing and scripting.

Software audits / supplier audits.

A well motivated individual with strong leadership skills. Able to work with a wide range of people and disciplines to develop and "sell" a coherent strategy.

A strong communicator, able to present complex solutions in a simple

manner.

A problem solver with a logical approach.

Ability to manage multiple stakeholders with competing needs.

A eye for detail.

Able to work on own initiative.

Hungry to drive improvements.

Responsibilities:

Leadership across the business developing the processes and future strategy associated with embedded systems hardware and software covering all elements of the lifecycle from design through to testing and validation.

This will include:

Hardware:

Liaising with suppliers to stay on top of the latest available hardware and costs.

Reviewing supplier proposals/quotes to ensure the Company is getting the robust, capable, appropriate and cost effective hardware to meeting our needs.

Developing our standard requirements for hardware to ensure that all hardware will survive in the Company environment.

Working with business units to develop specifications, perform gap analysis and help review supplier proposals.

Generating and maintaining a parts catalogue to help select the correct hardware and drive re-use.

Software:

Liaising with business units, suppliers and IT to ensure our software meets the required standards (Safety, security, interfaces etc).

Developing our standards and approaches for the software delivery process utilising appropriate tools to ensure we have the correct software delivery process, covering the whole software lifecycle. Evaluating and selecting toolsets.

Driving an improved software test and validation process, covering supplier testing through to on-machine testing to ensure good coverage and compliance with appropriate coding standards (such as MISRA).

Driving the Company's model based approach to software.

Developing our strategy for an appropriate architecture covering hardware, middleware, firmware, high-level control, low-level control and interfaces.

General:

Assisting and leading investigations into issues on products to determine root cause and develop permanent fixes.

Working with purchasing to develop our standard software contracts with suppliers.

Piloting new techniques and training others.

Drive re-use.

Basic Hours: 39hrs / week 08:30 to 17:00 (16:00 on Fridays)

Travel: Occasional UK and overseas travel

Salary/Rate: cGBP50000

Fringe Benefits: Pension Scheme, Health Scheme.

Relocation: Negotiable- generally covering all physical relocation costs
