This is an exciting opportunity to join a new business that provides scientific, evidence-based consulting services for urban planning, design, transport and property development.

This tool is a simple-to use scientific tool that untangles urban complexity and connectivity to provide a sound basis for strategic decision making and planning. Understanding complexity in urban areas is essential to the creation of places where people want to live, work and visit.

They are now at a point where they need to actively seek new business in order to establish a reputation within the urban design sector, whether it be, for example, with planners reviewing development options, developers assessing commercial viability or urban designers optimising masterplans. The appointment of a Business Development Manager is an important first step to achieve this aim. The services are delivered from the main office in Winchester.

The primary objective is to increase sales of their services in UK and internationally. This is to be achieved by:

- Making prospecting calls to contacts in the urban design, planning and commercial sectors
- Initiating and answering sales calls for their services
- Closing sales, maintaining customers' records and completing required documentation
- Arranging web conference and face to face meetings
- Carrying out client reviews/renewal calls at regular intervals
- Maximising revenue and customer satisfaction

The Successful Applicant:

- Proven Business to Business sales experience in a related role
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills
- Be enthusiastic, independent and target orientated
- Have an interest in the urban design sector
- Be able to assimilate complex information
- Have exceptional closing skills

Working space can be provided at their main office in Winchester (66 staff) and they have a small office (8 staff) in Queen Square, London, where temporary space could be made available to support the job, including the holding of meetings. In the beginning, they envisage the BDM spending several weeks at Winchester to become completely familiar with the service and the ethos of the company as well as to set up client lists and make a sales plan.

They would expect the BDM to be prepared to travel, accompanied by other staff as needed, to present the tool to potential clients in the UK. The opportunity to work from home for a proportion of the week will be possible and exact arrangements can be discussed in due course. While sales experience is desirable, the ability to communicate effectively with clients in their sector is important, and a background in urban design will be of great assistance here.

They intend to employ a Business Development Manager on a one year contract. They would review the requirement for a further contract at the 6 month point. Aside from a base salary of £30,000, they would agree an incentive scheme based on results, details of which are to be determined.
