The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineer to play the significant role in the specification and delivery of the software products providing the core functionality for the Future Local Area Air Defence System (Land) - (FLAADS(L)). FLAADS(L) forms part of the EMADS programme, which is a large international, land based, Air Defence Weapon System development programme satisfying the UK domestic (FLAADS Land), Italian domestic (MAADS) and Export weapon system needs.
We are looking for a capable, pro-active and enthusiastic engineer to fulfil the role of Software Requirement Authority (SRA) for the Command and Control (C2) subsystem.
The Opportunity
Reporting into the Head of C2, FLAADS Land, you will lead a team of ~7 equipment design engineers to establish and deliver the C2 software requirement specifications and corresponding verification scenarios and test definitions for the C2 Processing Unit (C2PU) and C2 Console. This requires close coordination with the UK & IT C2PU and C2 Console software leads to agree a compliant delivery.
Key aspects of the role are:

- Forward planning: Responsible for planning the maturation of the iterative C2 software specification baselines and allocating the design team resources to meet the plan on time, to cost and at necessary levels of model based software specification quality.
- Delivery: Ensuring implementation of the necessary design information and verification scenarios and test definitions, gaining agreement with the C2PU and C2 Console Software Design Authority and test leads. Through this liaison the SRA will manage and communicate the compliance statement and evidence generation to contribution to the sign off of the C2 Certificate of Design.
- Influencing: Ensuring the correct outcome is achieved when a broad set of customer, weapon system, sub-system, software and transversal stakeholders are involved.
- Decision making: Making timely decisions in a rapid development environment with an understanding the impact and outstanding risk.
- Team management: Manage the workload, outputs and personal development of a diverse team consisting of MBDA employees (dispersed across the UK and Italy), sub-contractors and offload contracts.
- Communication: Timely formal and informal communication of progress, risks and issues, and dissemination of tactical communications to the design team
- The basis of the FLAADS(L) C2 software solution is the MBDA Open Command and Control (MOC2) product line. The role will adapt the MOC2 black box and white box architecture to meet the specific FLAADS(L) needs. In addition to the core C2 functionality to manage an air picture, evaluate threats, plan engagements and manage the CAMM missile, the boundary of C2 for FLAADS(L) includes a Human Computer Interface to allow the operator to interact with the system.

Significant re-use from other MBDA air defence projects such as FLAADS (Maritime) and MBDA Italy`s Spada Step 2 means that cross project coordination will play a significant part in the role. Key interactions with other functions include understanding top down requirements with SD&V and tasking S&ET to develop and deliver the compliant F(L) C2 software product.
Within this joint UK / IT project team, interactions with the WSA&E, SD&V and SE&T functions in Italy form a key aspect of the role.
What's great about the role?
The role offers interesting, challenging, fast paced and exciting work within a rapid development environment, giving you the opportunity to lead the software definition and delivery for the sub-system that provides the core functionality of the overall weapon system.
Through working on the programme, the role holder can expect to further develop his people and technical management skills and experience, experience in Model Based Systems Engineering and the use of Rhapsody, software development, target hardware integration, software proving and working with the customer and in an international context.
Given the timescales of this rapid development programme, the role will provide experience across the lifecycle from definition, through development, proving and certificate of design in compressed timescales.
Command and control is required for multiple MBDA products, and development of technical expertise in this area will place the successful applicant in good stead for future roles.
Excellent training opportunities in a broad range of relevant subjects; achieved through formal training courses and/or on-the-job training.
What`s great about joining this team?
You will be joining an established, positive team with significant depth of technical expertise that is working to meet the demands with a rapid development environment, whilst also giving consideration to future Weapon Systems.
This team requires high calibre, flexible, motivated team players that are committed to delivery within a complex environment.

What are we looking for?

- Sound understanding of System Engineering Process (including System and Sub-System Specification, System Test and Integration)
- Experience of System Modelling using SysML preferably using Rhapsody.
- Knowledge of tools for Requirements Capture and Control (DOORS) and PDM
- Facilitation of team activities, meetings reviews, etc.
- Ability to analyse problems and propose robust solutions
- Good communication skills
- Timely and effective decision making
- Excellent 'can do` attitude and pro-active behaviours
- Engineering degree or equivalent
- Experience in software design and development programmes
