History and Description of the School


Tynecastle High School is a six-year comprehensive secondary school which has served west-central Edinburgh with distinction for 100 years. The school moved to a fantastic new site in January 2010 and has first class educational facilities.  The school is thoroughly rooted in its local communities, with learners drawn from Craiglockhart, Dalry, Stenhouse and Balgreen Primary Schools.  A significant feature of the school is the wide range of languages spoken, a reflection of its cultural diversity. The following areas are central to  our vision and values: a commitment to inclusion resulting in success for all, excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, and a caring ethos. A number of local and international partnerships support us in delivering these aims. We are for example part of the Microsoft Schools of Innovation programme.

Accommodation and Facilities

The school is built on four floors and benefits from a genuine sense of light and space.  Almost all classrooms benefit from interactive SMARTboards, which are located in purpose-built “teaching walls” comprising plentiful storage and equipped with conventional whiteboards.  We have onsite staff parking and are close to main bus and train routes.


The majority of subject departments have staff bases and there is a well-equipped staffroom on the second floor.  The Support for Learning Department consists of a Curricular Leader and four further Learning Assistants.
