Chailey Heritage Foundation are currently recruiting for Support Workers’ to join their on-site residential teams.

The Support Worker role is vital in ensuring that our very complex and disabled children and young adults have the opportunity to reach their full potential and prepare them for life beyond Chailey Heritage Foundation by promoting independence. It is hard work, and requires commitment, but it is a hugely fulfilling job and can bring real joy.

The role of a Support Worker

Working within a dedicated team you will be responsible for providing personalised support to children and young adults in our care. As a Support Worker you will help us to provide our children and young adults with everything they need to improve their lives.

The Support Worker role is hugely varied and challenging and no day is the same. From supporting with all aspects of personal care and medical needs to accompanying our children and young people with community activities such as visits to leisure centres, colleges, music gigs and of course the pub!  Above all else we want our children and young people to learn and have fun whilst in our care and therefore you will be expected to support us in making our homes a happy and safe environment.

You will join an established team of support staff who will offer guidance and advice throughout your employment at Chailey Heritage Foundation. To support you further in your role and to offer a real chance to develop your career you will be trained by nurses, therapists and senior staff.

Training and support

You will receive first-class induction and on-going training from qualified professionals and you will be supported in achieving a level 3 Diploma as a nationally recognised qualification. You will be assigned a ‘buddy’ to guide you on shift, and a mentor will provide regular meetings to make sure that you are confident in your new role; you will also receive support and guidance from your house manager and senior support workers.

What are we looking for? 

  • Basic knowledge of care: To care for our children and young people you will be expected to have a basic understanding of the care and support needs of people with physical disabilities and respecting them as individuals.
  • Literacy & Numeracy skills: You will need to write observations about the children / young people, we don’t worry about spelling but we need to be able to read and understand them. You will need to be able to read and understand instructions on equipment and medicine bottles, syringes and so on.
  • ICT skills: Many of our children and young people rely on technology, for learning, for fun, for speaking and many more things, so you will need to be able to learn to use their technologies. Also we rely on e-mails and using our intranet and the internet to find information.
  • Communication skills: you will need to be able to communicate effectively and appropriately with all sorts of people as well as the children and young people, including: other professionals; parents & families; visitors.
  • Common sense: a lot of what you will do will be following house managers’ and senior support workers’ or nurses’ instructions, but once you are competent, you may well be working on your own with a child / young person. We need to be sure that you will be safe and that the input you give to the child / young person will be useful and relevant. There are also many ‘health & safety’ factors to understand when working with our children and young people.
  • Flexibility: Our Support Workers are required to be flexible to work as part of a rota which will include early and late shifts, weekends and Bank Holidays.
