Our client is recruiting for an experienced and qualified Health & Safety Officer to join their Health & Safety team and to assist in providing comprehensive health and safety advice and support to all functions and staff within the Service.

Position Summary

The successful candidate will implement the programme of continual improvement across the service by identifying and minimising risks, developing safe working practices, disseminating information, and preparing and delivering health and safety training programmes and initiatives.

Your daily role and responsibilities will involve an array of tasks, including;

• Providing general advice and supporting technical advice to managers and supervisors, on a wide range of matters and procedural issues relating to health and safety
• Help improve awareness of health, safety and welfare issues within the Service, by undertaking basic research, collating and disseminating information
• Retrieve, record and distribute relevant health and safety information including all ‘Wellworker’ incidents and maintain the ‘Wellworker’ recording system
• Carry out risk, COSHH, impact assessments and technical workplace inspections

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate will hold the required qualifications, experience and skills to undertake this position;

• Recognised health and safety qualification (NVQ 5, NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and have proven post qualification experience
• Working experience with health and safety law, its interpretation and application within the workplace
• Experience of undertaking investigations, carrying out risk assessments and completing workplace inspections
• A CIEH Level 2 Award in food safety with a good knowledge of food hygiene regulations is required but can be obtained following appointment
• A qualification in ergonomic assessment is desirable, as is IOSH membership or equivalent

This role will initially be based at our client’s Service Headquarters in Central Bristol however the decision has been made to relocate all Headquarters staff to Portishead. Any job offer will therefore be conditional upon you accepting that your work base will alter from Central Bristol to Portishead.

You will not be entitled to any relocation expenses as you are accepting the post on this basis. In the interim period there will be limited parking available at the Central Bristol site. During your employment you may be required to work at any Avon Fire & Rescue Service establishment.
